Sometimes I have tried to tighten the nut and then try to loosen. Do this a couple of times and it may break it loose.

Lanse, before anything ,check adjustment at air intake to be sure it is getting full air pressure, and any valves are full on. Too much oil shudden effect it ,except to make a big mess....

Couple thoughts; Lanse, having tried to keep up with your posts:DID YOU READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS?, or like most of us New toy MUST PLAY. Please don't try hand power to stop ANYTHING!!! Do NOT take a day old tool apart, if adjustment is correct and it doesn't work,Warranty!! Water traps are nice but not always needed IF you WD-40 it to disperse water when putting tool away, will be needed for painting.

Sounds like grit got in. Disassemble, clean, reassemble. Doesn't take much. Try more oil to flush it out first.

I am going to jump on the band wagon here as well, having the air gun makes it easier to get the nuts and bolts off and such,, but it does not take the grunt work out of getting some old stubborn rusted bolts /nuts etc off,

These may need a 3/4 inch socket with a breaker bar and a cheater bar, you need to be careful when using a cheater bar on the breaker bar as if it slips you will know it,, but leverage is the best solution,,

once you get it loose then use the impact gun,, when trying to loosen stubborn bolts, nuts, lugs etc,, you can try TIGHTENING them first,, that sometimes breaks the initial rust hold,, may come off easier,,

as was stated these are old machines, and the lugs have been out in the weather for some time, dont be surprised to see those get rounded off,, but try the breaker bar first,, if that does not work put on a cheater bar,,[a cheater bar is nothing more than an extension of the breaker bar-- any piece of metal pipe that fits over the handle,,you should have one laying around the farm],, I have even used a large wrench on the end ,, something that gives you a little more push,,

Good luck, keep all these safety measures in mind when using any tool , if you got that larger tanked sears compressor, that has a big enough holding capacity to run your gun,, if you got the smaller one,, probably not,, but I think you were talking of getting the bigger one,

again be careful, dont be afraid to use penetrating oil on those studs/lugs either

like alot of us on here I wish I was closer I would help you out,, pat

Have you got the regulator turned down on the compressor. There should be a number on the impact and on the compressor, one telling how much air the wrench will take and how much the comperssor will put out. Most any comperssor that you would buy at K-mart will not keep up with a wrench for that long. You need to use it till the compressor kicks on and stop when it comes back on. Make sure you have the regulator set on 90psi.

Now, to jump on the band wagon, holding a socket in you hand to see how stout the wrench is is a good way to get the nickname stuby!!!!! ! Don't do it!!!!!

Good luck!
Dave

I've got an Ingersol 244 1/2" drive impact that will tear a glove apart if I grab the socket..I've also got a Snap-On 18 volt impact that will take off Mack truck Dayton lugs..Remember what I said??? You get what you pay for when purchasing any compressor and air tool..If you bought that noisy Sears job with the air tool package, well, I guess you gotta start somewhere..I've gone cheap on some purchases, and it always bites when I find that I've screwed myself over..Not happy with performance of inexpensive tools..Too much oil will just blow out the exhaust of the air tool.. Just a couple of drops will suffice..

If it is one of those small portable oil less compressors it probably dont have enough capacity to run an impact. reguardless if it came with one as a package deal.

If it didn't loosen the bolts, it's highly possible your impact gun just doesn't have enough torque. If it doesn't show signs of loosening, I wouldn't leave it on for more than about 10 seconds. You'll wear your impact and compressor out in a hurry. Sometimes a little turn by hand with a long bar to loosen the bolt is all you need for the impact to spin it off the rest of the way.

what about them wheel lug bolts on my B? I set the socket on them and let er rip, but it diddnt do anything at all in 5 mins or so of having it there. Its normal to be able to stop it with your hand by holding the socket wearing a lether glove?? Thanks in advance

It has a torque setting on the impact, did you try adjusting that?Even one of those 350 dollar impacts might not break a big bolt loose, sometimes you need a breakover bar and cheater pipe to break them loose.

No, dont do that. Holding for 5 min is a bad idea. If i doesnt come after the first few its not going to. You need some bigger sockets 3/4 drive will probably work and some heat. I know you are working on an ac b but on my jd b it took an inch socket with a breaker bar with a cheater bar with a torch. You can borrow these bigger sockets for the occasional use. If you bought at sears they will most deffinitely return the stuff, if you bought a oiless i would say return and wait for a sale at a depot or such and get yourself a real compressor. Also look for used two stores, you can buy 3x the amount of the same tools and for the most part non electric tools dont get worn out. Sears is nice but you are paying top dollar.

Are you talking about loosening wheelbolts on a JD B? If so, when was the last time they were loosened? If it's been a few years, then you are in for a spot of work and you'd better bring your lunch. You might end up having to use a 3/4" drive socket, a breaker bar and a piece of pipe over the breaker bar. I wouldn't expect a 1/2" drive socket to loosen JD B wheel bolts that haven't been loosened for years. This is a job (maybe) for a 3/4" drive gun and a compressor with cajones.

You can't oil an impact gun too much. All of the excess oil will just blow out of the exhaust. You can stop it with your hand because your hand moves. It's just like if you have a bolt seized in a rubber bushing, the impact will turn the bolt, but by the time second hammer comes around the bolt has already returned to its original position and it will never come loose with a gun. If you put the gun a bolt, it will still take the bolt out. But, you should NEVER hold a spinning socket in your hand. Make sure you only use impact grade sockets, extensions, and universals. Chrome tools will split or shatter!

turn the adjuster knob, pull the trigger and adjust for full speed then try it.

oil shouldn't do that...you must have turned the knob at the base of the handle to decrease the torque. pull the trigger in, and turn the knob til it's going full blast.

If you want those air tools to last, get a water seperator and instal it in line just after the regulator. Oil shouldn't hurt 'em...but water will!
