The original subject was "Black Streaks on Shingle Roof".

I agree that it is not the planes. Roof Mold or Algae has been spreading across the country.

Another option to investigate would be cleaning with an eco-friendly roof cleaner made with Sodium Percarbonate (which is a solid form of Hydrogen Peroxide, like in the brown bottles from the drug store).
This type of roof cleaner removes stains, but doesn't bother the plants.

After the stains have been removed there is a roof armor that can prevent the stains from reforming in the future.

I bought a product on the internet called shingle shield, it works pretty good.

it's a result of a stick or leaf rotting on the roof, and the resultant black streaks are bacterial and microbial deposits left over from decay.

No trees or sticks or leaves. It is all on the north side.

Thanks for the info. I missed the post until today.

I also have this on my roof. It is on the north side also which does'nt get much sun. I have read that you can put a strip of galvanized or copper (they say copper works best) under your top singles and when it rains it washes over your singles and elimates the streaks by killing the algae.
