just bought a old lathe an 11" Logan lathe. the motor mounting bracket is broken have the parts coming. My question is this 1) I do not have 220 volts in the shop and the motor on the lathe is one hp 220 volts 3 phase 3.2 amps.the spec's call for 3/4 hp @ 1725 rpm's don'tsay anything about voltage All I have is single phase power. Now for the question I can get a 3/4 hp 115 volt motor 11.6/5.8 amp's and another one @ 10.8/5.4 amp's
or I can keep the 220 motorand use a phase converter and run it on 1 phase but will produce approx. 2/3 of its rated hp.
so would it be better to get the 3/4 hp motoe or run the phase converter and only get 2/3 of rated motor hp which is 1 hp so basically running on 1/3 hp I do not think you can run a lathe on 1/3 hp. What do you guys think? thanks for you'r input on this Jerry L

A friend of mine had a similar problem a few years back on a lathe he had picked up at an auction. He had a 3 phase motor and single phase power in his shop. He made a rotary phase converter by spliting the windings in a 3 phase motor. One set works as normal motor windings and the other generates power for the lathe as the motor spins. He rigged up a flywheel to keep the whole thing going under load. He's still running it that way today. It's a clever solution and I've seen it done a few times by other people since then. Just seemed like a lot of hassel to avoid replacing a 3 phase motor with a single phase.

1-1/2 or 2HP variable frequency drive. It will take your single phase and make true three phase. Run at least a true 120/240 four wire 60 amp supply to your shop. Running everything on a 100ft 16 gauge extension cord is asking too much.

If the speeds are changed by pulleys[manually] then a VFD would be a waste.The easiest thing is to get a surplus motor and change it out.The new motor should match RPM s with the old one.If you want to collect more machinery then a phase converter could be considered as one unit can run separate machines[just not at the same time].I must say that I beleive you would have 220 in the panel now if there is two bus bars although its called two legs single phase.Are there any breakers that take up two spaces?Does it list the amount of wires the type panel is?

My point was, you can often buy used VFD's so reasonably it's cost effective to use them as phase converters.

You need 220V to run a phase converter. 3/4hp is mimnum, I would put a 1hp 110/220v motor on it.

Do not get excited about the voltage or the phase. Certainly no reason to get into the phase converter bs. You have a turning lathe (lucky you) that needs a motor of 3/4 or one hp to run it). Stick a one hp motor on it and be done with it. Then enjoy the art of turning stee1.

If the phase converter gives you 2/3 of the motor's rated HP, and it's a 1 HP motor, the way I would figure it, you should get 2/3 HP out of the 1 HP motor, NOT 1/3 HP.

The 3-phase motor is GREAT for reversing, if that is important along with the ways you will be using the lathe.

The 3/4 HP motors should work, as well, and one would ASSUME the one withthe highest nameplate Amps would pull the hardest.

VFD = Variable Frequency Drive, more or less a phase converter that allows for "soft starting" and motor speed control.

Just seen some images today of an interpid lathe operator who became caught in either the work peice or the chuck. Kind of difficult figure the exact initial cause. As the entire area was red & white ground burger and strips of flesh/clothing wrapped around the workpiece/chuck. It was tough to even figure out what the larger chunks were as they had been torn up. Then either flailed around the workpeice for a while. Or were drawn around the chuck and worked through between the chuck and the lathe"s bed. With the exception of the waist and legs that had not yet been drawn into the chuck. There was no working safety switch/emergency stop system. The lathe had continued to run for some time until some poor soul found the mess. I pity most the Emergency Response Personal and poor souls that found the scene and cleaned it up.
