I'm doing front brakes (disk brakes) on my '93 Bonniville. I don't do brakes that often as I always use high dollar parts.

Question: The outside pad on both wheels is nearly steel on steel, while the inside ones are probably less than half worn out.

Is this normal? What causes this? I've seen uneven wear before, but this time seems worse than usual.

Thank you,
Glenn F.

Your caliper slides are stuck, and they are locking up in the "on" position. Disassemble the slides, clean well with wire brush, lube with lithium and reassemble....or based on mileage, by a pair of loaded calipers and do the whole thing at once.

Silicone grease is better

Raybestos and bendix might disagree, since the grease they supply is lithium, but some brake grease is silicone as well.
The point is, do NOT use wheel bearing grease or moly lube, as it will migrate under temperature and get all over.

Just to be clear: Whenever you change out your pads, you should completely remove the caliper bolts and bushings from the calipers and lubricate them with the grease that's made for this purpose. The bolts are usually captive in the bushings; often you have to drive the bolts/bushing out with a hammer and punch. Replace them if they're rusty, otherwise just clean them up and lube the bushings so they slide easily into the calipers. That's about all you can do. Some uneven wear is normal.

Are the rotors more rusted (and therefore ROUGH) on the OUTSIDES?

Hi Glen, caliper does not slide on anchor bolts.Slides on bushings.Your problem does not make sense.Piston pushes inside pad against rotor first causing floating caliper to react and move over.Stuck caliper wears inside pad.Inside pad usualy wears more anyway because it contacts first.Mark

wrong...stuck caliper PISTON wears inside pad, stuck caliper SLIDE wears outside pad. Outside pad wear is far more prevelant, since slides are much more exposed that pistons. Happens all the time.

Caliper has to slide freely back and forth. Lube the slide bolts with wheel bearing grease.
