just like i said, after sitting 3 days it will start run a few seconds and die. then i have to crank on it a lllllong time to get it to fire. worse in cold weather. I think the diesel fule is leaking back to the tank becuase there are no leak spots on the ground. what should i replaCE????? FUEL PUMP?? DOES IT HAVE A BACK FLOW CHECK VALVE??? IT HAS 2 TANKS BUT DOES THE SAME WITH BOTH. THIS IS NOT A NEW PROBLEM I VE BEEN PUTTING UP WITH IT FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW.

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP GUYS. I AM GOING TO PROCEED IN A SYEP WISE FASHION. IT WILL TAK A WHILE TO TEST EACH FIX. I AM GOING TO START WITH THE PLASTIC/RUBBER TRANSITION SINCE THE TOP OF THE ENGINE KEEPS A LOT OF DIEDEL DAMP DIRT ON TOP IN THE BACK WHERE THE RETURN LINE TRAVELS.

I TRIED THE SCHRADER VAVLE SEVERAL YEARS AGO. WILL REPLACE IT AGAIN. AND THEN GO T THE O RING AND REBUILD KIT FOR THE INJECTOR PUMP. I WILL LET YOU ALL KNOW HOW THINGS GO.

THANKS AGAIN BILL.

I agree with Dieselpaul.Look on ebay also the kits are cheap and should solve your problem.Do yourself a favor and install Beru ZD9 glow plugs while your at it.Just changed them on my truck and it made a world of difference.Started right up last Saturday on 18 deg morning without block heater. Not bad for an 220k mile old work horse.

"almost every time i run into that problem, I end up finding it @ the injector fuel return plastic bonnets/o-ring. they don't even have to show a real leak. diesel pump shop can sell you a complete kit"

(I don't think anyone else mentioned this, so here goes)
You sound a little like the 1984 6.9L I worked on. There is an o-ring that seals the line adapter in the pump. On the 84 you take the inlet line loose and the fitting it came out of unscrews from the case. That fitting has a grove in it for the o-ring and the receiving side on the pump is a taper. IF the o-ring is a little too small I found it would not leak a drop. But when you shut it off it would almost instantly let air in the system. It would fire and die and then you had to bleed the air out. I didn't go to a dealer but other than that good luck finding the right o-ring if that is your problem. One too big that actually got pinched between the case and the fitting worked. At present it has two smaller o-rings it it and it hadn't caused any problems until the line to the pump got a hole it. But a hole in the line gets to a can't drive it condition pretty quick.

electric booster pump between mechanical fuel pump and injection pump pre charges system. Time the preheater cycles it pops right off. then flip the toggle switch to shut off booster pump and mechanical pump feeds the injection pump. Wanted to burn my 91 f350 to collect the life insurance on it till I figgered this trick out. Have since had folks tell me it is best starting ford diesl they have seen, starts right off quick w/ no smoke

That's not a fix, it's just a band-aid. The Ford-IH diesels start fine when all is working like it should. Having a electric pump makes absolutely no difference in starting if the system is working right to start with. If there's a air leak causing fuel drain-back, and the real problem isn't addressed - only then can the pump make a difference.

Jdmaris, guess some guys would rather buy a high dollar pump, run more wires and make things more complicated instead of fixing the real problem with the inexpensive kit. Hate to see what some guys do when the radiator hoses start getting old and soft "just duct tape it?" Nope you buy new hoses. Same thing here. I.P. install kit and you are done.

might be a band aid but did the trick 2 yrs ago and no longer experience the temptation to burn the truck. Also don't have to walk home when truck truck doesn't feel agreeable

Hello Bill.

It sure sounds like the fuel is going back to the tank, especially if the tank is below the fuel inlet of the pump.An easy fix is a simple one way check valve. Make sure you select one of the proper I.D. The valve should not cost much and it should cure the problem. There may be a leaking hose on the suction side of the pump that can couse the same problem. You would have to pressurise the system to make sure it is not your problem. A sight glass in line with the fuel line will also tell you if air is beying drawn in the fuel system as well.
Guido.

you know almost every older 7.3 around here has to be ether to get them going....we always figured it was just a shorter life engine....maybe it was this! The electric fuel pump idea sounds like a good one.

I've got an 85 F250 with a 6.9 and a 94 with a 7.3 turbo. Both start just fine in cold weather - in fact - better than any of my GM 6.2s do.

Like just about anything, they need to be maintained.

I had an "88" with the same problem. back to the dealer a few times and they couldn't find the problem.
I finally found that the fitting on the back of the engine (drivers side) was letting air into the system but never had any signs of leaking. It looks like a spider has a few return lines going to it then goes back to the tank it is a compression fit to a steel fuel line that goes to the front of the motor. Theres a rubber gland in there that let air bleed into the system over night making it a bear to start in the morning. I replaced the gland and it worked for a while then did it again. So I went and got a couple 1/4" brass "T" fittings put them in place of that fitting and never had the problem again.

There have many articles written about fuel drain-back in diesel trucks with Standyne injection systems - including by the US Army.

For your 7.3 - try reading this guys essay on the matter:

What we always did was call NAPA. We got an electric feed pump and installed it just before the injection pump. By the time the glow plugs cycled, the fuel was there every time.

I had that problem, fornd the filter was loose.
Also one of the electric plugs on the filter base was leaking,I cleaned it and put super glue around the termenels. Every thing good untill the
-#%*&* thing blowed a head gasket.

The IDI Ford diesels often get air leaks in the little Schrader valve on the fuel-filter assembly. When that valve leaks, it lets the fuel system get air-bound when parked for awhile - and then has to bleed itself out when restarting.

GM had the same issue - but their valve is on the injection pump.

Check the Schrader valve (looks like a tire valve) - and check the mechanical fuel pump which also serves as a check-valve.

Unless he's changed out the engine it will have the 7.3L IDI in it. The 7.3L PSD's have the cam sensor and they didn't arrive until '94, I think.

I had the same problem on my '90 F-450. Turned out to be the fuel/lift pump. Changed the pump and all was well. I'm sure a leak somewhere in the lines may do the same thing or similar as suggested.

After tearing the engine down and rebuilding it I noticed how badly the pump lobe on the cam was worn. Decided to put an electric pump on. Did that and it works very well and priming after filter changes is a snap. If you were to put an electric on it is highly recommended that you put an oil pressure switch in the circuit so that if the engine shuts down (as in a crash) the pump will not continue to push fuel out. An inertia switch would work also. Both (that is what I did) would be better. Good luck.

Start by looking for ANY fuel leaks that get damp while the engine is running, and catch dirt.

When the engine is shut down, they let air INTO the fuel system.

Even any leaks in the fuel RETURN system can cause your symptoms. Start by looking at the plastic return fittings at the top of each injector, and ALL associated lines. The plastic fittings can crack, and the "O" rings that seal them get brittle.

Look at the IP for leaks, such as at the throttle shaft.

The fuel LIFT pump can fail.

There is a fuel/water separator behind the LH fenderwell that often geats leaky, and lets air into the system while the truck is sitting.

Have a look at those things, and I'm sure others will post some other ideas.

replace the valve stem looking stem on the back of the fuel filter on the engine. they were known to go out and cause this problem. maybe $3 fix.
