Lost tools revisited

Lasy week there was a discussion about misplaced tools. Some here, some there, where do they belong? In the house? In the barn? On the truck? I have found that useing colored tape on each tool work wonders to keep track of its home base. The pickup is red, so all tools in the pickup tool box have red tape, or paint if tape is not practical. For the garage, it's blue tape. For the back shed it's green tape. For a portable grey tool box, I use grey tape. Leave the roll of tape in the tool box or drawer for new tools or replacement. You can buy a pack of 4-5 different colors for a dollar or two. Now let's see, where did I put that package of new tape I bought yesterday??

Well, you have Mac, Snap On, Craftsman, Williams,
Crescent and so on. What you are all talking about is that seldom heard of tool line, called USTA tools. Doggone it, I usta have one of those now where did it get too?

Stick the tape idea. Get organized and put it back where you found it. 4-5 times doing that and you will live better and be able to think more about the job at hand. Painting them in at a job site to seperate them from other workers would be a good idea, but on the farm keep it neat.

you can do like i did and when you cant find a socket between the 4 trucks, 2 trailers barn,house and shed, and lets not forget the ones dumped on the welding trailer, i go buy another cheap set, my wife , after noticing this habit got to looking in all the places this stuff really hides,[ only women will know where this place is,] i was looking for a common 3/8 drive 3/4 regular socket for something, it was gone as always, so far this weekend she found 56 of that exact size, now i got 1

Several years ago (many now) I worked in a John Deere dealer then went to work at a marina. I was required to buy my own tools and specialty tools. The marina had a break in that cost me about $13,000 in Snap On and Mac tools. The lock on the Snap On box was broken out and the tools were gone. We figured with the 5 boxes that were emptied, we lost about 60,000. Mine were metal stamped with "DD" in case someone see's them.

I used to do something similar back when I worked at a grain elevator. When something broke, and everyone owned their own tools, we each had them painted a different color so we knew at a glance whose tools they were. I still use some of the blue painted tools to this day. DOUG

no kidding.....i know sometimes I have a tool i need but I have to look 8 or 9 places before I find it. I have almost as much in the door pocket of my work truck as I have in my main tool box in the shop. i always think "I won't forget it here" when I put something down. When I need it..... Where the F did I leave it?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Hi slowpoke,

That qualifies as brilliant. I love simple ideas that actually work, as opposed to complicated, overthought ideas that don't (which is what all governments seem to deal in exclusively.)

I can't help but ask, do you recommend dollar store tape or should I get 3M or Nashua?

Better take a couple of days off after that one. No one person should produce such geniosity in one single day. I've had two or three packs of colored electrical tape laying around for several years. I'll get started on the weekend.

I dont know if you are kidding about useing the tape this weekend but I would sugest getting some new tape, bcause old tape doesn't stick to well

I was in on that discussion. I do use color tape on my garden tools. If the are down on the groung they blend right in..... . ARRGHH.
So the tape makes them easier to find.

I did that with my fence'n tools kinda. I took a can of bright orange spray paint and laid all my pliers, the post driver, and high tensile tight'n handles out and painted all them. Now when I drop a pair of pliers along a fence line I find them next trip by.

I found one of my chainsaws last week on top of my uncluttered workbench right where I left it. I must have walked past it a dozen times looking for it..... Now wheres the Gas Can??

please post pic of uncluttered workbench, I've never seen one. The day I moved mine in the shop, 2/3'rds of the stuff on the floor jumped up on mine.
