On HGTV last night, one fellow was using a 4 1/2" angle grinder to cut some tile to fit.

The angle grinder sure looked like a Chicago Electric grinder I bought at HF for about $18.00.

in winter i repair tool for a pallet shop and they have about 25 harbor fright 41/2 grinders and they get a lot of use only time we junk one is if they brake the end off other then that only thing that goes wrong is the wire in the cord will brake next to the unit easy fix cut off 6 in. of cord and rewire and after about 2 years of use the brushes get short so just change brushes. buy the Chicago brand not the drill master

I buy the cheap ones. I had a clark one quit in a few hours of use, just too it back and they gave me another one. It is still going after 2 years and lots ow wheels wore out on it.
One think I like is that most of the Chinese power tools now come with an extra set of brushes.

Hi Goose,

Over the last five or six years I've bought about a dozen 4" and 4-1/2" Chicago Electric and Drill Master---H/F's even cheaper brand---angle grinders (and a 9" Chicageo Electric one that I had to return for replacement twice before I got one that lasted more than 30 minutes). About half of them are still running. They run until they stop, and sometimes that's years, and sometimes it's while they still look new. When they stop running they can be gotten running again about half the time.

For the same amount of money, considering only angle grinders in the 4"-5" range, I probably could have gotten 2 Metabos, or 3 Boschs or Milwaukees, or 4 DeWalts, etc. I still haven't been able to decide which is the better way to go for two reasons. In favor of the many Chicago Electric grinders approach, some of mine suffered violent deaths that probably would killed better quality tools, too. (On the other hand, maybe not.) Against that approach I would put the inconvenience and irritation of having a tool quit on you when you need it. It especially doesn't help to have a replacement tool for one that quits if you don't have it with you.

I'd say that my inclination now is leaning toward having fewer but better tools. I recently bought a Bosch angle grinder for about the cost of 4 Chicago Electric ones, but I haven't been able to make myself use it yet. I guess I'm saving it to use for the talent portion of the Nobel Prize competition.

All the best, Stan

I like Stan have also bought many $15-$20 4" grinders, I now have one that always has cut-off wheel other's with grinding wheels and dedicated some with diamond wheels for tiles and wire wheels Etc...its like a drawer full of screwdrivers except its a drawer full of a bunch of cheap 4" units that keep on working.

The chicago electric PADDLE SWITCH grinder that normally sells in the high $20's and sells on sale for $18, has been a great value. they are identical to a Black & Decker model, so identical that all parts interchange. They are all ball bearing with good steel gears. They run for years and only die when dropped long distance or run over. last ime they were on sale for $18, I orederd 5 which cost less than $100 including shipping. They should see me out ;-)
