Made a lifter bleed down tool...more on the Ford head headaches

So for you guys that have been following this, I needed to find a lifter bleed down tool to check the lash on my valves after the machine shop re-surfaced and reground a few valves....but decided they wouldn't butt-grind the valves. I made the tool using a U-bolt and a claw hammer....guess what....the two valves that were ground were out of tolerance on lash/gap...so I made a couple pedestal shims out of stainless steel.

here's my new question...a couple lifters actually seemed to bleed down and lose their oil after all the fiddling....as I recall...they will pump up pretty fast when I crank the motor...RIGHT? These things do pump up fast I hope or the damn thing won't run very well for a while.....

I found a picture of a bleed down tester in an old tech book. It consisted of a steel can which was filled with oil, and a weighted handle that pushed the plunger down, you timed now long it took the plunger to go all the way down. Since the head has now been milled down so far, ever think of using two head gaskets to get the compression ratio back down, so you don't run into a fuel problem? John Ne.

Well, I agree the place is awful on this job...the problem is they have too many managers with no supervision of the job or quality control. I got to talk to the head shop foreman once...after I complained about the knick in the freshly milled surface of the head.

I told the counter guys to keep the stem height neutral on any valve grinds...they just didn't tell the head shop guy...what's worse...this place does all work on site...so there really is no excuse for this....next time...I'm going to a performance shop....it costs more...but the detail to tolerances and the customer are worth it.....

The lifters will build up as the oil pressure builds. If the lifter has internal wear or the oil has trouble getting into the lifter, there might be a clicking until the clearances are filled with oil.
