Building a bridge over a small creek. Used 2 14 by 10 in. steel 20 ft. girders of 1/2 in. steel with 2 12 in gussets welded between them. planked it with 3in.x 12-18in white oak ( unseasoned). bolted the planks with 5/8 carriage bolts 6 in. long on either side of each girder using heavy washers to catch each girder under the edge of the top of th grders. when tightening the bolts a couple turned in place and roundedout the shoulders and now i can't tighten them(not that they really need to be). What would be a good fix? Could i drive a square nail next to the bolt and try re tightening them. I'll bet that would work?

Hey! I just backed the bolt out a little and drove a square nail alogside the bolte, beat it back down and it worked like a charm. You see I'm alone so I could not be on the top of the bridge and under it at the same time to hold a screw driver. this worked cool!

if the nuts and threads are in good shape(not too rusty) try giving the head a couple of good raps with a hammer. if you can turn them at the same time as you rap them it will help

Brad,

Have had this happen a couple times. Cut a slot in the head of the bolt big enough to fit a screw driver. Then you can hold it to tighten or remove it.

Or weld a nut to the top then grind it back off when you're done. Also, if you have room on the treads, put two "jam" nuts on top of the regular nut, hold that with a wrench while you tighten it.
