Have a 2 and 1/2 Ton Floor Jack. It does not raise when pumped. Un-screwed screw...seems to have fluid. Any suggestions of common causes along with common quick fixes to repair.

Appreciate you ideas / suggestions.....Thanks//

Here's what some guy on this website told me and it worked on my 20 yr. old floor jack:

He thought it had air in the valves at the pump. So open the drain/lowering valve, and support it upside down at each end and let the ram drop down all the way so the lift ram fully extends. Leave it like that for a day or two so any air bubbles can escape. Then close the drain/lowering valve and turn it back over.

Also I sometimes find my jack lifts only part way and stops. If I crack the fill plug air escapes and then I can raise it the rest of the way.

I had exactly the same problem with a bottle jack today. It only lifted part way. I had just filled it, but I thought it was low on oil, so I pulled the rubber plug. But I believe it was a vacuum pulling air in rather than a release of air pressure. Without replacing the plug, the ram extended fully. But when I opened the valve and the ram came down, a lot of oil came out the fill hole. It had too much oil because I had filled it while it was laying on its side. The oil is supposed to be even with the fill hole when the jack is upright. I think the reason is that when there is almost no air in the reservoir not much oil can be pumped out into the piston before the vacuum becomes so high that oil will not enter the pump. When filled to the oil level hole, there is a lot of air in the reservoir, so the vacuum does not get high enough to prevent the oil from entering the pump. Kind of like putting a straw in water and holding your finger over the end. The water remains in the straw because the vacuum under your finger holds it in.

Time to take it apart and look for debris on the screens inside as well as worn broken or cracked cup seals. When you have it apart look for check ball seats that are chipped and otherwise rough which will prevent the check ball from seating.
