will do, i am faxing a request up to them to see if they have any manuals. i couldnt find a website or email address for them. i have a couple of 400 amp mig machines that came out of a caterpiller plant in the barn too, i"ll have to post pictures of them rascals. they are huge. some day i got to get them up and running. they are 3 phase.

Have you ever used wire feed above 300 amps or so? It's quite an experience if you're not used to it. There are four Miller multi-function welders set up for dual-shield at the community college welding shop. They can put out 600 amps, more of less. I've used one at its max setting, just to see what it was like. You have to remember to turn your auto-darkening helmet to a higher setting, and be wearing plenty of protection from the heat. I did those things, but within five minutes my gloves were smoking and my Harbor Freight helmet started flickering. (It will also do that at lower heat settings if you get real close and stay there for awhile.)

Once you've got enough top end so that you've got a high duty cycle at 200 or 250 amps, you shouldn't need much more unless you decide to start repairing mining equipment, or something similar.

Hi Stan, through out the 1980�s it seemed as all I did was work in splicing yards. Either big beams, or big pipe. When splicing 36-inch x 300-pound I-beams like in the first picture, and welding flange to web gussets it was 400, 500 + amps all day, every day. When I walked out on site if the machine didn�t have at least 400-amp capabilities I kept walking. Back then if a weldor could not burn 70-pounds of NR-211, or 21-B a day, he wouldn�t be there the next day! The second picture is a work trestle we built in the Columbia River. All 36-inch pipe piles, 24-inch I-beam caps, with the double 36-inch x 300-pound I-beams for the main frame, with 12-inch x 12-inch timber mats for the cranes to walk on. That trestle was basically the same size as a football field. The trestle lasted all winter, but when the spring run off came down the river, the water mowed that trestle right over. Right at 3-million dollars of steel on the bottom of the river! third party image

That's mind-boggling stuff. I'd love to get a chance to see some of that kind of work being done.

I wasn't trying to tell glennster that nobody has any use for more than 250 amps with a wire feed welder, only that most of what a person would expect to need a welder for on a farm could be handled at that level or less. It was my roundabout way of saying that there are probably a lot of ways a person's time could be better spent than to go to the trouble of getting a 3-phase 400 amp welder operational for general purpose repair---as much fun as that might be.

Oh Stan I understood perfectly what you were trying to say, and agree with you! :o)
My point was when doing it day-n-day-out it�s not so exciting. I got to the point I wouldn�t take any more calls to work those splicing yards, you get to feeling like a machine. I love to build things but I�m not going to set over a pipe going round-n-round in a set of tank rolls! More to life than doing that.
When I look at a wire feed machine I look at max Amps and duty cycle. Just boggles my mind that Miller and Lincoln build wire feeds with 40 to 60 % duty cycle! Sure not many homeowners will push a machine like a pro will, but what if they can? My little 200-amp Linde is rated at 100% duty cycle. Guy at the local welding supply told me he used to work on them a lot in the 1980�s, he told me If I didn�t push my machine to hard no reason I couldn�t run 1/16-inch hard wire. Biggest I ever run now a days is .045. If I need anything bigger I switch to 5/32-inch SMAW.
