I have been searching around the internet trying to find out how best to wire RG6 coax for TVs and can't. I am thinking two ways: Is it best to run a separate wire to every TV and then join them all at the main line from the cable company, or the second way, would it be better off to run a few lines to major areas(like upstairs, basement, etc) then split from there? The second way would take less wire, but which way would perform better?

Thanks for the replies guys, I will go for the home runs rather than more splices. Very true about cable usually failing at the connectors.

Separate runs. When you finally get tired of the cable companies ripping you off and switch to satellite, you will need separate runs from each LNB. It is much easier to do it now with that kind of anticipation than to do it over later. The dish installer can then just put his grounding block where the cable company had their J-box and you only have one connector in the line. If you are going to have problems, it is almost always at a loose or corroded connector.

What kind of connectors are best? The type I have always used are the one piece crimp on type for RG6 for indoor connections.

We use snap and seal but it requires a special tool. No matter what connector you use make sure you get the right size. RG6 comes with different sheilding quad six being thicker does not really preform any better than standard tri sheild. Stay away from cable with one layer of foil and copper braid. If you use a hex type connector make sure you the right size dies in the crimper. Most connectors require 1/4" center conductor exposed and 1/4"of the braid.

Cox Communications wired our house and the wire was on their expense - and they ran a separate wire from the "box" to each outlet. Would have been cheaper for them to do otherwise but they bit the bullet for the extra wire and ran them separate. I asked the tech about it and he said junctions and splices invited ghost signals and degraded performance.

Home runs work best. You can run as many as you need and only activate the one you need. Cable companys usaaly have a designed signal level a the the tap at the street for x amount signal. The real key is how far you are from that tap and what bandwith they running. Being a cable guy for 13 years and counting I always prefer home runs. As far as the best cable find a cable guy in the area and ask for cable, can"t hurt for a freebie. The real factor is the connectors used and most at lowes and radio shack suck.

Resistance isn't weakening the signals. It's sharing the signal between loads. And inductive,capacitive impedance along with signal loss leaking out through the coax shield.
I replaced my tired RG6 with RG11. What a difference on just 75ft from the tower amp to the splitter. Splitter is amplified too.
You need an amplified splitter and one cable to each load. What's still required is a FM trap before the tower top amplifier. The new FM radio tower 3 miles away is overloading the tuners.

Believe it or not, most of the loss in coax cable is from the resistance of the cable. Mainly the resistance of the center conductor of the cable. This resistive loss is AC resistance caused by skin effect, which is greater than the DC resistance of the wire. The higher the frequency the greater this loss becomes. There is also some dielectric loss that comes from the type of insulation between the center conductor and the shield. Loss from signal leakage is very small and mostly negligible.

Running multiple home runs or a single line with multiple taps will net you the same amount of loss depending on how many splitters you use. Each time you split in two you loose half the signal power.

If you have 4 TV sets and you run home runs to each you need to split the incoming signal with a 4 way splitter. That leaves you with � the signal power to deliver to each set plus the loss in each cable.

If you run one cable and use splitters near the TV sets you will wind up with the same amount of total loss. You will need 3 each of the two way splitters in order to run 4 sets. Each of the outlets will result in a signal level that is � of the original signal level. So it really doesn�t matter, as far as signal loss goes, where you do the power dividing. With this type of system some of the sets may get more signal than others that are farther down the line but the farthest one away will still have the same amount of signal as you would get with a home run type setup.

A home run system might be easier to amplify if that is needed as you can do it all at one place.

Do what is easiest to do. The performance will be the same.

I use BNC connectors at the VCR's & Tv since they're easier to disconnect and you don't have to
unscrew the nuts on the coax cable. Hal

Coax cable I used is RG59 and I used several splitters to make connections. One splitter has one inlet connection and 5 outlets. Very easy to hookup. I ran one wire to the second floor since the house was built before cable came along in 1973. I could've prewired the house had it been available then. A lady that worked for me prewired her parents home during the construction
and had cable in every room. I have a problem with the squirrels eating off the insulation on the outside pole, but that's repaired by the cable company. I don't use anything to boost to the signal. Hal

Thanks for the replies guys. The reason I think it would work fine as MF294-4 has done (the way I was thinking of doing)is because the entire full strength signal is carried into the house on the one RG6 wire, so wouldn't splitting it many times at a main hub just create extra loss in all those lines? But most people advise to use individual runs to each TV set and thats where I get confused.

I did what you suggested in the second way. I ran short runs to the kitchen, dining room, living room and den from the main cable. No problem with reception in any room and I'm on cable. Hal
PS: I've had cable since 1973. What we need is some competition so they lower their rates.

Run individual runs if it is a install that you can get to. I've worked with this for 30yrs. If you ever want to put a dish in, all you have to do is put a multiswitch in at the head end and a reciever with a diplexer at the tv or any tv. We've had some motels and houses with a single run but you have to start out with so much at the head end to compensate for loss to have enough signal at the end.

As Im sure youre already aware, the less resistance the better (less signal strength loss) n that pretty well translates to less cable length. I prefer to make all the individual TV home runs alllll llll from a single hub (to avoid double splits which sure arent lossless) and as needed have a multi output distribution amplifier there at the hub so each set gets a full dose of signal. Those distribution amps (if needed based on incoming signal strength n cable lenghts) arent all that expensive n should provide yearsssss s of trouble free use. If you have enough signal strength (to drive say 4 TV's) without an amp it will still be easy to start with an unamplified multi output distribution hub n then add amplification if needed..... .

In my opinion the best way would be to individual runs from the main line to each place you think you may eventually want to put a TV. I know this way would take alot of wire but you'd wind up with much better reception on each TV in the long run. I say this because every time you split the signal you lose some of it's strength. Right or wrong I've been told this draw down happens wether you have a TV hooked up to the line or not. So, if you pulled everything from the main line you could have a wire going to every anticipated connection point but at the same time you'd only have to hook up the ones you were actually using thereby reducing the draw down on the signal strength.
