Well it's becomes time to buy a new weed eater, the last one lasted about 20 yrs. I am looking for a good quality one, I am sure it probably won't be cheap. Any recomentations, I like to stay away from the ones at Wally world & Lowes wasn't real inpressed with them. Thanks Dave F.

I've got the Stihl FS130 with the 4 mix engine and love it. Plus is, I let the wife try it one day and she liked it too. Nothing like a nice cool beer while watching that significant other enjoy a job..... ....

I was going to get an FS90 and was told by an "expert" that it wasn't big enough so went to the dealer to get an FS250. Dealer said that the FS90 was overkill for what I wanted but was all they had with straight shaft and 4 mix. So happened that the FS130 was the pick of the week and came with a bunch of goodies for about 20 bucks more than the 90.

Pretty drawn out way of telling you to go with Stihl I guess :)

Dave

Stihl, Shindawa, Deere. Echo. You'll be happy with any one of them.
Stihl and Deere both have good dealer network, not sure about the other 2.

Cub Cadet, Ryobi, Troy Bilt (at Lowes), Homelite, Weedeater, most Craftsman, etc at box stores - not so much.

Places like Home Depot and Lowes are carrying most of the major brands too, I know they carry Deere and Echo. I haven't checked lately but I wouldn't be surprised to find Stihl there too. Only problem though is getting them serviced.
Echo works well for us, I know there are a couple local smaller dealerships that actually do repair rather than the big do-it-yourself stores. Once apoun a time Echo actually made Deere too...

I would buy an Echo, I personally think that there is not a better string trimmer than Echo. I have sold a lot of differant brands, including Echo, Shindiawa, Stihl, Redmax, and for quality, Echo is the one that most commercial cutters ever wanted and the easiest ones to work on and they lasted longer.

Most everyone is making 4-cycle trimmers now. I think they are government mandated.... cleaner air or something. You still need 50:1 mix though.

I am surprised at the powerhouse comments on the 4-cycles though. I have 2 Stihl 130s and thing they are underpowered as compared to the 2-cycles. Plus they seem to take more time to get up to RPM.
Stihl is now the only brand that refuses to sell at the big box stores. They seem pretty supportive of their independent dealers. Great product, great support and if you have a dealer close by Stihl is the way to go. Plus most of their products are made in the USA now.

Straight shaft is the way to go. The curved shaft has a cable down it which flexes and absorbs some of the power. versus the straight shaft which has a solid bar. I was told the cable-shaft is more likely to break as well as costly to repair.

Hey ChrisB
Do you have a 4cycle engine that requires a 50 to 1 mix? . Your post was not clear to me.
Guido.

I also have a stihl brushcutter. You just can't kill that thing. Straght shafts are the way to go, they are much stronger than the curved ones.

Stihl's 4 mix win hands down in my book. Lotsa power and very reliable.

Hello Dave F.
I bought mine at Sears. It has a 4 cycle briggs and stratton engine.
It does have the individual string pieces trimmer head.
I bought it with the brushcutter attachment and the trimmer head came with it.
The model number is 21032 the brush attachment has a blade that does a good job with small saplings. I don't know if a string attachment is available for it . My guess is probably not. It is a straight shaft model.
Here is a number you can call 1-800-235-5878.
They should be able to answer your questions on the product, good luck!
Guido.

Got dad a new Stihl for Christmas, I think it's the 90 sized model with a straight shaft. I was looking to buy him a pole pruner saw but I ended up spending just a little more money and got the string trimmer with the pruner attachment so we can use it all year long.

stihl is the way to go, i bought one 4 years ago with the brushcutter and string trimmer heads, used the heck out of it and i do mean used it, its dead now, but that compares to a "weedeater" brand life of less than 30 days doing the same thing, the stihl is money well spent

Hey Dave F.
How about getting the new ones with the 4 cycle engine. They are real power houses. You can get one that has the changing bottoms. Engine ot top, weed head, brush head, edge trimmer head and even a blower attachment. Don't know how much you need to trim, but this type gets my vote.
Guido.

Gotta agree with Sam on Stihl..... ... best out there.

Although you might be more inclined to see what dealers are close by and choose the brand from that.

Go down to your local Stihl dealer and get a good weedeater like you want. We run the Stihls into the ground and they"ll handle it. The weedeaters we have technically aren"t weedeaters, they"re brushsaws (it hangs from your shoulder and there are 2 handles on either side of the shaft). I like the way they are balanced and hang from your shoulder better than a regular weedeater.

Just my 2 cents
I work in Demolition and Land Clearing and get to play with the brush saws quite a bit, love em!

On heavy cutting, the curved shaft tends to twist the whole unit in your hands. Just imagine if the shaft was bent at a 90 angle about 12" up from the head...you can see how side forces would twist the whole machine. The curved shaft is only about a 45 bend but nevertheless it will try to turn the tool in your hands. I'm still running a straight shaft Green Machine that I found at a free recycle place 20 years ago. It was left for scrap.
