LED SHOP LIGHTS

Have any of you guys heard of LED shop lights? I dont mean the trouble lights, like a drop light, but actual fixtures you mount on the cieling. Through the grape vine I heard some power companys offer rebates for installing these in your shop. Problem is, no one else seems to know where to get them. Thanks for any info.

I have been looking for something to replace nightlights - something that lasts a while. Found a "under shelf counter light." Draws 2 1/2 watts, has 24 LEDS, about the size of a chewing tobacco canister. Interestingly, some of that 2 1/2 watts is heat, as fixture is warm to the touch. Light is blue-white, and is almost spooky in that dark hallway. All the white LED lights I have seen have this characteristic. I"m not sure I would like lighting my shop with that light. I have used outdoor fixtures, both sodium vapor and mercury vapor for shop/garage lights. Neither puts out light as easy on the eyes and to work under as old conventional bulbs. At least I"m not banging into walls in the dark! In answer to your question, never seen any LED shoplights.

The color of the light depends on the wavelength, and the wavelength can be specified in LEDs. The cost of general lighting using LEDs is quite high right now, many, many times the cost per lumen of conventional incandescent lights, but the costs are falling.

Where the LED works extremely well and is very cost effective, are in portable work task lighting. The high efficency of the LED allows plenty of light in a cordless work light, while still having long run times between recharging.

For example, take a look at these state-of-the-art lighting tools that are being introduced into the professional market for use by auto and industrial mechanics.

I bought an upgrade for my 12 year old Mag light. Really bright and supposed to be easier on batteries. Cost about $18.00 which is more than I paid for the mag light new.

Just checked their price for flash light replacements, bulb only. From $1.39 to $7.99 for a 1 watt bulb.
