I'm not a welder.

I bought a HF MIG for $10 at a flea market. Guy said it wouldn't feed smoothly. He was right. I replaced the HF wire with wire from a welder's supply and new tips. Ordered a new feed wheel from HF (this machine is about 10 years old). After some tinkering, it feeds just fine now. I've never welded before other than with oxy/acet, many years ago. I practiced some and have since done a few minor jobs on my tractor and post hole digger, and a few other things.

I've looked at and priced welders over the years and couldn't justify the cost against the amount of usage I give it. That HF POS seemed the only way for me to be able to enter welding world.

I have no doubt that if my first welder was a Miller or Hobart, I likely wouldn't want to go anywhere near a HF. As it is however, there's no incentive to warrant a change- yet.

Hi Mark,

I inherited an unused H/F wire feed welder that lists for $299 and always seems to be on sale for about $100 less. The person who left it to me had plenty of money but no free time to use the many H/F tools he bought so he didn't know how inadequate they were.

It took me about 15 minutes trying to get it going to realize that it was too cheaply made to ever work in any way that I would consider acceptable. I own some good quality welding equipment and have access to a lot more, but that doesn't mean that someone who doesn't have a basis of comparison is going to be satisfied trying to use H/F welders. A bad welder is likely to turn a new user against welding altogether, in my opinion. The other side of that coin, which is also just my opinion, is that only an expert operator has any chance of getting even minimally acceptable results from a low quality piece of welding equipment.

By the way, and not to open a whole can of worms for the umpteenth time, I consider H/F auto-darkening welding helmets to be one of a relatively few items they sell where you get good value for your money---IF you buy one on sale for $50.

All the best, Stan

Since I dont know anything about that unit Ill just say this.Thats only 25% of a four hundred dollar Miller or Lincoln..A wire feed that does not work well will drive you crazy.Ask someone what" birds nest" means. Or how about parts for repair availability? Why doesnt the ad have the specs.I think when you call Harbor Freight your calling India and they cant help with a welder.

Tractor broke 60 miles from my miller but a Harbor Freight 110 was available. Took a few more passes but it worked. Saved me two days horsing around plus tractor down time.

Dont mess with cheap mig welders.A mig has a lot of parts that may need to be replaced. You need good parts back up.How much does the 99.00 welds er weigh? My Miller 130 weighs 65 pounds and does good work within its range.Nothing wrong with a small mig as long as you know enough to stay within its work range. You would be better off buying a used Lincoln,Miller or Hobart mig.I have a Lincoln 225 stick welder for big jobs.A small mig with an undersized transformer and a weak feed system will sour you on welding.I bought my Miller used for 300.00.It had several rolls of wire, small tools and a leather welding jacket with it.I got it from a fellow who had inherited from his dad.You do need a welder that can use gas.My miller had a 10 pound roll of stainless wire include with it.Cheap tools are trouble...

I've got a 180 amp HF mig that I would let you have for 99.00. You'd still be wasting your money but at least it has a decent duty cycle and will weld up 14 ga metal.

A cheap welder is worse than none at all.

Mark,

99 bucks will only buy you frustration and headaches.

A 90 amp welder is only good for very light sheet metal and with a very short duty cycle. Probably 20% which means you should weld 2 minutes out of every 10.

Replacement parts or consumables will be hard to find... probably even hard at H.F. I imagine that you"ll only be able to run flux core 028 wire.

Stick with a brand name... Miller, Hobart, Lincoln. Yes they are more money but yes, you will be pleased with it and yes, you will be able to make sound acceptable welds. Watch the classifieds or craigslist.com for used units. Check with your local welding supply and tell him what you want. Sure, he"ll try to sell you a new one, but lots of times they lease out machines and then sell them used when the lease expires.

I bought a Hobart handler and a Millermatic 200 that way and got a heck of a deal.

Hate to rain on you but the only thing I"ve bought from H.F. that hasn"t broken was a small anvil and that"s only cause I haven"t hit it hard yet... :-)

later
John

Harbor Freight and 99 bucks? Isn't that enough information?

First, it's certainly not MIG-ready. Probably not even capable of conversion to MIG. Flux-core only.

If that's not enough, the electrode is always hot on these cheap welders. One of the nice features of a decent MIG welder is that you can stick the wire right where you want to start welding before you drop your helmet without getting flashed.

I LOVE THAT. My favorite thing in a mig ever. I can stick that wire right there on a joint and shoot. Man, i'm trigger happy!
