I need to understand a wiring issue. I have a power window motor, whose gear is engaged in another gear (starter flywheel from a small block Chevy). I need to switch the motor to spin both directions. If I hook it up to a battery, I can get the motor to spin both ways by reversing the wires. What type of switch do I need, and what wires go where? The electric motor has two wires coming from it.

Thanks in advance. This one has me stumped.

Bill

Don't mean to be a wise guy but there's a gazillion power window switches out there in the wrecking yards. Just a matter of devising a mounting for it.

You need a 3-position toggle switch, with 'Off' in the center (6-terminals). Wire the opposite corner terminals together with two different wires like an X. Connect the 2-battery wires, one to each of the two center switch terminals, and the two motor wires one to each of a pair of terminals on one end of the switch (either end). 1 2 3 O O O O O O 4 5 6

Jumper a wire from 1 to 6, another from 3 to 4.
Connect motor to 1 & 4 (or 3 & 6).
Connect battery to 2 & 5.

You need a double pole double throw switch and if you want off with a center off position.
Wire the motor to the two center common terminals and the battery or power supply to each pole but reverse terminals on the opposite end. similar to the diagram

Tech,
Wouldn't a NC set of contacts cause a meltdown?

That is a diagram I found and why I said similar. I said a double pole double throw with center off. That switch in the diagram is a special slide switch that has a spring load back to the contacts on the left. I doubt that he will find that switch very common as it is used for another purpose but the wiring will be correct if he gets a DPDT Center off toggle or non spring load slide switch that will handle 10 amps. That diagram is for the ease of showing the wiring which will be correct..

Thanks to you both. I really appreciate the help. I'll pick-up one of those switches and give it a shot.

Be SURE the switch's DC Amps rating is adequate for the load it will be powering.

IF I understand correctly what you're asking, here's what I suggest: Use a SPDT toggle switch [ON-OFF-ON], with the ground being run to the case/mount of the motor. Then connect each wire from the motor to opposite sides of the switch...and you should be in business.
