I've got a diesel loader/backhoe that seems to overheat and die after 30-60 minutes of use. Any ideas?

Went through the same thing this haying season with my MF 165. The fuel petcock was plugging up with debris getting stirred up in the tank from jostling around a rough field.

There is a screen in the tank to protect the petcock.. it was clogging up to the point where running the engine at half throttle or better, it would simply drain the filters and then the injector pump would run out of fuel.

Let it sit for an hour.. enough fuel would come through the petcock and fill the filters again and it would start after bleeding the injectors.

Drained tank, cleaned petcock strainer, rinsed debris out of the tank as best I could, re-assembled.. no further problems.

Pull the fuel line off the petcock and see what kind of flow you've got. Should be nice and strong. If it's a dribble, you've found your problem.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. It normally starts back up an hour or two after dying, like you said, but I haven't had to bleed the injectors. The tank is off to replace a bad steering hose now, so the timing couldn't be better.

Of course, other things to check are (logically) the fuel filters, fuel lines and the fuel pump output.

Does the engine 'race' or have erratic throttle response before it dies ? That's what mine ususally do... both the MF's and the JD's behave that way.

Usually if they die from fuel starvation you have to bleed the injectors... but sometimes I've 'got lucky' restarting without cracking the lines at the injectors.

Really not much else to go wrong with a diesel..
compression + fuel injected = runs.

Good luck.. let us know how it turns out.
