Because of a long driveway, I can't get cable or DSL...poor wireless reception...so I have recently gone with satellite internet.
How many of you are on satellite? Which Service?
What kind of experiences have you had?

WildBlue. Jes got it at xmas. Heavy dew will knock it out. Fast download, slow upload. You cannot win any timed games, takes to much time sending. Marginall y better than dial-up at 5x the cost. Still I like it better.

Like Bellyacre (love the handle BTW) I have WildBlue in a fringe area. Doesn't take a lot of weather for my modem to drop the bird.

Still, it's WAY better than dialup. OTOH, if DSL or Cable become available, I'll be switching again for the improved reliability and better price.

We had Wild Blue for 3 years, worked pretty good most of the time. Because of our location it would struggle in bad weather. Telephone company has upgraded our area now so we switched to DSL. I find it faster and works in all weather conditions. Wild Blue was $50/month DSL $30

I have Hughesnet. Pretty fast on downloads, extremely slow on uploading - i.e. sending stuff out. Overall, it's better than dial-up - but I kept my dial-up as a backup.

There are many outages when the satellite service goes dead - usually for a minute or two and then comes back. I notice that when it does go dead, my satellite TV still works.

I've got the $50 per month plan and I own the equipment. I could upgrade for more money - and put in a faster uplink transmistter - but $50 a month is enough.

You also have to be careful how much you download in any 24 hour period. If you exceed 250MB - they shut you down. I found out the hard way.

Hello JDEMARIS
Just curious of the speed of your service?
I thougth it was faster then DSL?
It does not sound that fast. Do you know what the speeds are , downloading and uploading?
Guido.

It is sometimes as fast as DSL on steady downloads, and barely any faster than dial-up with uploading and sending files.

It is only fast on downloading when your hooked to one file with a steady download. Otherwise, webrowsing gets slowed since it requires two-way communication. Not as slow as dial-up, but close. It varies all the time. I get many short outages during any day, regardless of weather. They often last 30-60 seconds but can get pretty annoying.

Here's a test I ran.

I tested outgoing mail with a 78K attachment. Took 80 seconds with Hughes
webmail to send out, took 40 seconds with Hughes to send with Outlook Express, and took 35 seconds with dial-up. I also tested again using Outlook Express to send a 157 KB attachment -
it sent in 35 seconds as opposed to 85 seconds with dial-up.

I too have hughesnet, recently i exeeded the allowable download and got more or less cut off for 24 hours,so i upgraded to the next plan and i'm not impressed at all,i can't tell the difference, other than i can download about as much as i want, there is one more plan, they call it the professional,i don't know how it would be though,i get alot of "page cannot be displayed" then go back and click again and it's fine.

With the original and cheapest plan, you can download all you want - but - it has to be in the middle of the night - and not during regular hours. I found out the hard way.

Where I live, I have no other choices - it's either satellite Internet access - or dial-up. The satellite is costing me $50 a month - and the dial up is $9 per month - and the satellite is not five times better. But, it is nice to have most of the time.

I knew when I came here that there is no mail delivery, no school bus pickup, no cable TV, etc. - so after the Internet got invented - I didn't really expect much here anyway.

Wireless broadband service from cellular providers ?

A new Verizon cell tower is going up near me and I am planning on getting wireless broadband.

I have Hughes net, started out with Direcway purchased and serviced through Earthlink about 4 years ago. I recently canceled my Earthlink service and switched to Hughes to get newer modem and a better plan. Things really tend to slow down a lot in the late afternoon and evening hours. Early morning is usually good though. Better than dial up unless the weather is bad but would certainly like to have DSL.
