I have a Ariens snow blower that has the power chute option. The chute is rotated via way of a small electric motor which recently failed. One of my friends told me the motor was actually a windshield wiper motor. I stopped by our local auto parts store and took a look to see if we could find a replacement. We didn't find a exact replacement but a few were pretty close. The snowblower is only 3 years old and the replacement is $200 from the local Ariens dealer. It would be nice to find a replacement at the local auto parts store if these things only last a few years. I was wondering if anyone out here knows if this motor is really a windshield wiper motor. Thanks for any info.

I have a similar problem with a Mastercraft aka MTD blower. I don't know about Ariens but my chute motor looks suspiciously like a GM power window motor.

google mt22138706 or check the link.

I will agree with Tim.

Take any part numbers you can off the thing and Google it. Done that many a time instead of getting bent over by some manufactures who think because their name is on it it is worth 10 times more.

When something can be done as well and as easily by hand - never buy a fancy motorized "automatic" version.

If the motor has manufacturer name and model number, you might just Google that info and find one on e-bay type sites, or maybe even a cross reference to another brand.

Also with regard to the unofficial extended warranty for that sort of thing, especially if they know it is a poor design issue. I had that experience with my Honda snowblower - Honda gave me a new carb and a kit to prevent carb freezing after the machine was well out of warranty, and paid for the dealer to do the work.

I would call the Ariens factory, direct if the local dealer will not do anything. Ariens, normally will on the 3rd year of a 2 year warranty on a high dollar, low use item, will pay for the parts and you pay labor to install it. go to www.ariens.com to contact them.
And as for the comment of a good delaer giving you a break, how do you propose a dealer do that, normally stuff like that is a low discount item, they give you a break of 10%, pay shipping to get it in, pay their employee to look it up, order it, recieve it, call you to let you know it is there. By the time they do that, they loose money. If it were an aftermarket part, you would be correct, but most lawn mower OEMs have cut discounts down to 20-25% off retail price, then we pay the shipping from the factory to our store. Everyone wants to blame the dealer for high prices, it is the manufacturers doing this, not most local dealers, we are just trying to stay in business to help you when you do need something!!!!

By "Break",I simply meant @ actual dealer cost or such.In my case retail via MTD is well over $200+shipping. A couple online parts dealers are offering the motor for $180ish w/free shipping on $50+ orders. Now as they're not in business as a non profit"hobby",that indicates to me that their dealer cost is considerably less than MTD retail price and they are passing that savings along while STILL making some, though less profit margin% on the sale.

I agree with JT - I see no need for the dealer to take a hit on such a thing.

Certainly the manufacturer ought to stand by something such an item for a reasonable amount of time. As suggested, they will likely "extent" their warranty for that motor, then no one looses out except Ariens for a poor design, or using an inferior part in the first place.

Why sell it at dealer cost, the dealer should not have to foot the bill, he did not manufactuer it. I will say no more, I am not going to debate this with you, I know for a fact what costs and dealer margins are, you are just guessing what dealer costs are and you assume someone is trying to take advantage of you. Face it, cost of doing business has increased, cost of material increases, cost of labor increases, cost of tansportation has increased, cost of parts are going to get higher.

Perhaps.... in reply to JT, 02-21-2008 11:23:53
I worded it wrong or presented it wrong but:
A:I buy an expensive snowblower from dealer.
B:Expensive part fails shortly after warranty period, due to poor design.
C:Mfg"suggested retail" is $30-50 over"dealer aquisition costs."(including shipping/etc).

I am simply saying that it is dealers option to sell me the part at his "aquisition costs".Therefore it costs the dealer NOTHING to give me a bit of a break, other than his lack of markup on that one part. And he has a satisfied customer who will continue doing business there, rather than going elsewhere, and not be dissing the dealer and brand to friends and family.

Similar problem with power chute Cub Cadet, small gearmotor is nearly $200.My problem was moisture getting into motor and gearcase and freezing,Did get it dried out and working, but design is poor, will happen again.Dunno about your Ariens, but my motor is nothing like wiper motor.Strictly unique apparently.
Ariens are almost"gods" in the snowblower industry though,Good dealer "should" be able to give you a break.
Funny, but these lil goodies like power chute, heated grips, dashboard spout control..Spoil ya REAL Quick :)

Can the chute be hand operated? Mine is on my Simplicity unit, just a hand crank. How big is your snow thrower.

If its only 3 years old, its still under warrantee.as an Ariens dealer,we also have a little known process to cover it even if out of warrantee
