I have an enclosed trailer that I wired sometime back for 120v power. I have a few lights and some outlets coming out of a small 4 space electric panel. works fine when plugged in to "wall" power
I purchased a generator as I sometime dont have power available and want to run the trailer from it. the gen has plenty of watts to run what I am trying to run, however when I plug the trailer in to the gen nothing works. I have power to the panel but none of the lights or plugs will work. the gen will run the light"s when plugged in with a extension cord but will not run them through the panel. any ideas??

You should get a licensed electrician to check your wiring installation to be on the safe side.

Talk to us. Is your trailer panel wired 120/240. Is your generator hookup 120/240??? Are you pulling meter to hookup. Are you in mobile home park? Are you using transfer switch like you should be?

Do you have a photo of where the wiring leaves the generator, and one of where the wires are attached to the power panal?

The picture of the power panal would be with the cover off.

Either the GenSet and/or the Panel needs to have a ground rod driven and be effectively grounded. Your GenSet may not have the neutral bonded to ground on the GenSet. The panel at 220 volts is probably grounding when plugged into the utility power but is floating (not grounded)or has an incomplete ground when on the GenSet. Check your GenSet manufacturer's manual electrical schematic to see if it shows the proper ground set-up.

Seeing that you are using a 230v panel you do know the 120v breaker slots going down alternate on which leg of the 230v it is pulling from.
The plug that you are using is only tied to one load buss. If you are using an extension cord with two male ends to power it up and plugging it from 120v socket in the trailer to a 120v socket in a garage or house, then only the breakers that are on the same bus would be hot (alternating breakers).
If you are connecting the generator in the same fashion, then it must not be into the same 120V plug in the trailer.

I am not sure what code is for this but you will definitely want to check before hand. But it sounds like you got the wrong panel, but could be solved by tying to two busses together. Or if you have enough space, just place the breakers all on the same bus.

My guess is you have a wiring error. You are using a conventional panel on your trailer that has the safety ground tied to the neutral. Somehow when plugged in to your home ac the neutral is open in your line cord. When you plug in to home AC the safety ground is being used as a current conductor. When plugged into the generator the safety ground is not tied to the neutral at the generator and no current flow. Check the neutral connection in your cord.

Hi j-tex,

Are you sure you have the trailer wiring hot and netural wired correct?

Some of the new gensets have a different mode of generating current that I've not read up on so I don't totaly understand there output therory. I've only listen to my son talk about them. A true 2-phase generating system with 60vac on either leg??? I just don't know.

If your using a 230v load center, are you pulling 115v off the correct side of the bus bar?

You may only have 60 volts at the 4 breakers when using the generator. Hal

Measure that voltage at the 4 breakers when connected to the generator. Hal

P.S. Sounds like your generator hookup might only be feeding one bar in panel. Keep checking.
