Pellet Stove Recom.

My house was recently destroyed via straight line winds.... at least no one was seriously injured. So, I am going to change from a wood burner to a pellet stove. I can carry a bucket alot easier than sticks.

Anyway, I'm looking for a reliable stove & would like any suggestions you folks may have. I was looking online at Harman and Bixby. One important item is that it must be quiet as can be... Any constructive input is appreciated.

For a central heating system, I was told that you compare 2 kg pellets to 1 liter of oil. Almost replaced a wood stove with one that used either. After the turbine comment, glad I didn't. Those 5 and 10 kg bags were awful tempting though when compared to cutting, hauling, and stacking firewood.

The American harvest is LOUD....so that one is out, it sounds like a turbo fan in my living room. Real warm though.

If you insist then look at the Harman 45. It will burn pellets, grain and unofficially stoker coal. Direct vent, no chimney required.

Unbelievable..... ... I suggested radiant heating before I looked at the pricing on an American website. Still the way to go if you can find reasonable prices.

I have a friend that bought a pellet stove. Now he is not able to buy pellets locally. The local TSC is out and says they will be getting no more this winter, same with southern states....
3 bags of pellets left and he is desperatly looking for pellets.

Are you building new? If so, why not plumb it for radiant heat and have the flexability on how you heat the water? I am in Germany but the same stuff must be available for you. We moved into an old farm where the only central heating was a coal stove in the center of a room. Did everything myself with ebay materials and have been enjoying it for 10 years. Pellet prices here seem to go up IAW the number of systems sold.

If you go pellet be sure to buy a generator to run the stove when the power is out.

We have installed all types of woodburning stoves and furnaces and my main problem with a pellet stove is the electrical needs and all the gadgetry. They need motor for pellet feed, fan for forced draft and fan for heat circulation. Too much to go wrong control, boards always going out. The convenience is great but we seemed to always have more problems than they were worth. The place where I always thought they were good is in the river houses on stilts, sure beats carrying wood all the way up and bags are easy to store.

Before you buy that pellet stove take a look at Geo Thermal heat.

No pellets or sticks to carry and more economical to run than the pellets.

Down side is cost of installation. But over a few years it will pay you back.

I might add one other disadvantage to a pellet or wood stove.

If that is your only heat source who looks after it if you are gone for a few days.

Goe thermal or gas fired take care of themselves.

If you never leave home, this is not an issue.
