My thanks to those of you who replied to my question about air compressor ratings. That message is a page or so back now.

I really got my eyes opened by that one reply, I had no idea that my understanding of cubic feet per minute at a certain pressure was all wrong.

Thanks for enlightening me.

Hi Illinois,

Careful with cfm ratings. What is correct for compressors is not correct for pneumatic tools. You might want to review this before comparing compressor cfm ratings with tool cfm ratings.

Rod, Thanks very much for the explanation(s) of pressure, etc., for the compressors and tools. Straightened my mind out. Thanks again. We need more of this on this forum. bob f.

You're welcome Bob. The use of the term cfm and its derivatives can be very confusing. Most compressor and tool manufacturers are not consistent or complete in their published ratings, which can lead to a misunderstanding on the part of the consumer and disappointment after purchase that a compressor is too small to properly operate a tool when the "published numbers" seemed to indicate there was no problem. Buyer beware.
