Don't take this the wrong way. I was looking at Puddles gooseneck trailer mods post and thought it might be fun to see if the non professional welders could tell which welds were done with which process? I'm not trying to insult anyone. Just asking? Dave

Kemper said: (quoted from post at 21:04:13 02/19/08) Well Dave, you seem to be the professional here,so why don't you tell us about the weld in the eighth pic,the horizontal weld, explain what you think about that weld.

Well, I know what they were called in W. Central Illinois, which ain't too far from S. East Iowa so ..... .

Since 'Dave' already gave his critique on Puddles photo #8 ..... Quote: "See my post above. I think that 7018 weld might not be finished as other parts aren't either. The weld could look a little rough because a gap was formed for extra penetration, that may not have had a perfect equal width gap or bevel in the gap. It's also possible Puddles just finished reading the archives on here and saw mj's welding cart and was laughing so hard he couldn't keep his hand steady! If not, all welders won't always do an absolutely perfect weld. Lets see some pictures of your 5G root pass with 6010? Then we'll talk? Dave" I guess mine is a bit simple minded but it looks like a '3-pass Navy weld' to me that got a bit cold on the 3rd pass and I know this 'cause that's what my last one looked like but, what do I know?
Ya notice how he keeps reffering to my welding cart? It's like his greatest moment to notice that it's made out of scraps on a Sunday afternoon; he actually LOVES it .... it's become a part of his persona and he can no longer live without it. Well, DAVE, I hate to part with it but, hey, I like you! Shoot me a PM and we'll deal .... :P

Didn't you run away with your tail between your legs a week or so ago? Post your prototype contraption again! I dare you! You're probably going to need a hoist to mount the cylinder up on top but then you'd need a 16 ft. ceiling just to push that ill conceived piece of work? around! Dave

If you'd taken time to look the bottle is visible in the photo ..... it's the grey, vertical tube that you see a part of. Look between the top of the blue thing that says 'Miller' on it and the bottom of the red/black thing that says 'Lincoln' on it.

A good weld works better with no grinding, too. Have seen lotta millwrights do nice welding job and grind a little too far and something critical broke because they ground the weld right off.

Exactly! It appears there are some who just can't admit they don't have as much experience as they think and would choose to try to baffle us with their Bull. Unbelievable! I was trying to show how a skilled person does things and encourage others to do the same. Sorry for the rant. This really irks me! Dave

It's not hard to tell a wire weld from a stick weld,i do not consider myself a professional welder by no means but i can weld just as good as the next guy.

Are you going to show us a picture of a prototype contraption as well? If so, then I'll agree you might be able to weld as good as the next guy. Or as bad. LoL Dave

Well since you did ask. Of course Puddles did it and can verify or not what I think, here goes. Slightly rough looking 7018 possibly caused because a gap was created for extra penetration. Crater put in middle of weld to eliminate notch effect at either end. Weld may not be finished and could have more passes applied to produce a larger fillet size. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it! I was trying to put a fun post up so people could maybe learn something. I think they did. I just might have a little more knowledge than the guys that like to critisize, like you and mj! Puddles obviously knows what he's doing! Over to you Puddles, Am I pretty close? Dave

Oh,"put that in my pipe and smoke it"??
Come on mr professional is that all you can say about that weld? You see i don't claim to be a professional welder so i have nothing to prove,as to you, when new guys come on here with the attitude that they are so much smarter than everyone else they get called out,and it looks like you didn't like it when you were asked what you thought of the weld, well heres my thought on the weld in particular, at first glance the weld looks to be too cold, the rod angle should have been directed more to the channel it was being welded to,it looks like most of the weld is on the pad,now in the other pic it looks like alot better weld from a different angle, but a little more rod would make a stronger weld, now i hate to pick apart someones weld but i didn't start this thread either, and mr 135 fan "you can put that in your pipe and smoke it" Maybe your handle should be "welder man"

Are we talking about the padeye welds? If your talking about the 1st picture trust me, I’m a better weldor than photographer! If you were standing in my shop you could see that weld looks much better in person.

Or are you talking about the 2nd picture, again loose nut behind the camera.
Now the 3rd picture is one of my better attempts at impersonating a shutterbug! third party image

Thanks Puddles for the pics! I know a good weld and welder when I see one! It is painfully obvious that you take a lot of pride in your work. I was just trying to instill this quality in others. Sorry I got you involved in this. I, like you probably, have no problem at all getting called out when I do happen to do a crappy weld. Even the best pipe welder in the world is going to fail an X-Ray eventually. Dave

As a painter its a well known fact that some good 3M seam sealer can make a crap weld look proffesional if applied correctly prior to painting!

After an angle grider is used on the welds they all look the same.

A good weld looks better with no grinding! It used to common to always clean them up with a grinder though. Someone came to their senses. Dave

Im no expert, and have not gone to any welding school, and I know that grinding a weld, and not taking a lot off of it makes it stronger because it removes stress from the weld.Plus peening the weld does this too. Those welds looked alright what I saw,but I dont think some of em got the attempt at humor. Welding is one of the better jobs I can remember having.I had a good feeling when I was 18 to 22,and I would walk in that factory to work.I think I felt like whoever it was that built the pyramids.I didnt think I was going to spend my whole life doing it,but I have kind of spent a lot of time welding.I thought I was a good welder when I could weld a weld with 7024 and it would peel the slag off.Lots of the old drunk guys I worked with couldnt do that. Then really nobody cared.Since I could do that I got more to weld, untill you get burned out on it.I didnt like mig,but it was a break from stick, and I got good at that. Then I thought after a couple of months that I was a good mig welder,in that factory. They had cranes and stuff and wanted you to weld everything flat as possible, weld weld weld all the time.Ater a couple of years of that, they got a job that had to be uphill.I was happy they chose me to be one of those uphill welders. After that I thought,if I am so good a welder maybe they will pay me more money,so I asked for a raise. The boss said "welders are a dime a dozen, next you will say you are going to quit and by tonight I will have another welder as good as you, maybe better". Now I know that welding flat is not by any means the only way to weld.I know there are lots of better welders than me.But if you want it to hold,I can do that now.I know welders are not a dime a dozen.I also know that its not hard to be a good factory welder if you weld flat all the time.In real life you usually have to crawl up inside some machine at a bad angle, then sort of guess where you weld at something, then grind it off and do it right, time after time. The stuff that breaks is usually already broke some place you cant even see without a mirror. Now when you do that and make it look good,I dont think you can say "dime a dozen welder" any more.I also know there are people that weld stuff every day that is not in ideal situations like way up in the air, under water, inside tight confined areas, and lots of places that a lot of "welders"wouldnt even try and think about doing unless it was in a shop, laying flat.Nothing wrong with that welding flat. But just to make it more realistic do it standing on your head with a blind fold on then send a picture. Those who like to criticize a lot try this as well, then maybe you all will like to grind a little more, and be a little less critical. But I bet everybody would get a laugh out of seeing a picture of that.Sorry I dont have any idea how to send a picture, and dont want to learn either.
