saw the discussion about chain saw safety. I do on own any chaps. Are the $50 Northern tools ones OK for occasional use with a light saw, or do I need the $130 ones?

I have a bench light here that uses a two prong cord that goes into the wall but it has a three prong outlet on the base that I can plug into. Made in China but UL listed. I discovered this after learning the base of the lamp was 'live' the hard way.

UL licenses their sticker and it is up to the company to comply. I will never trust UL after seeing that.
With that said I, why take a chance on Northern tools and Chinese crap? Good insurance to spend the couple of bucks more and buy something from a reputable company.
I have a pair of Stihl bib/coveralls/chaps that are 15 years old, and still holding up. Even with the two pieces of duct tape that are on them. Twice they saved me, but cheaper then a ER visit.

The better chaps will be UL labeled or be US Forestry Service spec rated. Also look for Prolar or Kevlar as the ballistic filling material.

Doesnt pay to skimp. However even cheapest, non-rated chaps are gonna provide a WHOLE lot more injury protection than will your Levi 501 jeans(!)

Incidentally one of my kids has a $50 set he got from Northern Tool - if I recall they are UL labelled...

any chaps are better than no chaps - if you wear them, cheaper ones will not fit as well or hold up as well

chaps mostly wad up in the chain and slow it down enuf so you get scratched instead of losing wide slice of leg meat
