I want to clean-up and paint a steel girdered bridge on a pond. My question is: If you should,God forbid, fall in the water while holdind an electric tool woulthe result necessarily be electrocution? I would be using a portable generator and the pond is about 1.5 acres.This sounds very hazardous.The welder who was repairing some of the girders didn,t seem concerned and he can,t even swim! His welding wires were sitting in the pond the whole time!

Nother thing. In the 70's I wired a lotta pools with ground fault circuits. Unless the new mexican GFCI's are better, I always tested by putting my finger on little screwdriver and stickin' it in the hot side. Never tripped a single GFCI. After about 2 dozen times, never tried again. Complained to inspectors, they must not be any good. Never got an answer and couldn't get them to try my test.

Path has to be from live line to true earth. If the ground and neutral have been mixed up or combined. The gfi won't work. If the path is live line to neutral the gfi won't trip either.

Ive seen plenty of GFIs that wont trip.Lots of internal parts to fail.I opened one that had a transistor split in half,probably a lightning strike on the power line.I wont depend on them.

All construction sites are required to have receptacles GFI protected.That is your protection.All bridgework all tools must be tied off anyway so they CANT fall.

I am just curious, how would a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)work on a portable UN-Grounded generator? Both sides of the line and the generator frame would be isolated from ground and no current should ever flow between ground and the generator. Now public mains with a grounded neutral is another story.

A GFI does not need a ground.The generators Ive seen have a GFI receptacle built in.A GFI works on sensing returning neutral current.I know a GFI on an ungrounded generator up on a truck will protect you.In an older home where there is no ground at a box the code requires a GFI to be used to protect people against shock only but not overcurrent.

Doc,

Tech4 is right. A "ground fault circuit interrupter" won't do any good if there is no ground fault to detect. A generator can't create ground fault unless it's somehow grounded.

You don't see a lot of GFCI's in hospitals. That's because virtually all medical equipment uses isolation transformers to "float" the patient side from ground.

Just my point that an un grounded generator will never trip a GFCI. The GFCI trips when there is an unbalance between the hot and neutral which is grounded on the supply side. With an isolated generator the hot and neutral(actually there are two hots with no ground) will always have the same current since there is no ground path. You could take an isolated generator with a GFCI and touch either lead separately to a ground rod and it will never trip. In the home the supply has the neutral tied to true ground. I think if I was worried about falling in the water that I would keep the generator isolated.

Hi Brad,

Back when I was a pup, I got to see a man wearing chain for a safety belt up 40ft off the deck welding a I-beam joint when he dropped his stinger on top of the chain and the rod stuck to the chain. Now were about 200ft away and we could here him girggling from on the ground and that made us look up. I ran over and killed the lincoln pipeliner he was using. It took 6 of us several hours to lower him off that I-beam and he was still foaming at the mouth when we loaded him in the ambulance. I never did here if he made it or not or don't remember it anyway but I'll never forget the way he looked trying to get him off that steel.

I also ran into a lady that told me how she had lost her 5yo son in a bath tub. He reached over and grabbed a hair dryer and dropped it inside the tub full of water while the hair dryer was on. The home builder had removed the GFI in the bathroom to take it to the next house so it would pass inspection. Ya, she's got a few bucks now but less one child.

If getting zapped by the welding machine or the generator didn't kill you then maybe drowning in a foot of water would, or the fall it's self might.

I posted a photo of the bridge in "community" photos. It is more or less 60ft. long and 6ft. wide the girders are 12in.The rust, in spots is thick but it will be only foot traffic.

Brad, you asked the question, so that kind've makes me think that you realize that it wouldn't be a real safe practice. One thing's for sure...steel girders through impure water (conductor) to ground, a hot drill in your hands and you're the fuse between them. Not that it can't be done, but...

Had a friend (a roofer/sider) that was redoing a house that he'd just bought for him and his fiance' whom were supposed to be married in a few weeks. Siders use light weight aluminum scaffolding, and thats what he was standing on when his head touched the service ahead of the meter. His scaffold was in morning dewy grass. A neighbor girl came out to play and found him lying on the ground, boots still smoldering. No wedding for a usually careful friend whom had been doing roofing and siding for ions, was happier than I'd ever knew him after she said "yes" to his proposal. She was a mess at his funeral, as were most.

For 15 years in UAW plant, common knowledge was a fluorescent light could never have enough current to hurt anybody. But one day my buddy, master electrician, was electrocuted while changing a socket on a fluorescent. Another thing about welding, ask the families of weldors, who died in the shipyards in Norfolk and Memphis. Voltage only gets the flow going, if resistance is low enough, and it varies with individuals, couple milliamps across arms and heart and you better have reason to give the Lord why you should go to hea ven.

A lot of people have been electrocuted in bath tubs, but almost all of them did it by touching or holding something OUTSIDE the tub. Hair dryer, radio, light switch, etc. Despite all the depictions in the movies of someone throwing a radio into the tub to electrocute the bather, it just doesn't happen. Yeah, you could get a nasty shock, but the chance of electrocution is remote. Just remember to LET GO of the power tool if you start to fall.

No, the welder wouldn't be too concerned, because his welding wires are around 50 volts. High enough to give you a good shock, but not necessarily lethal. (Not lethal on dry ground that is.)

Thought mythbuster proved this one. It was a fatal jolt even without peeing in the tub. Turning the water yellow increased the amperage on the dummy.

More to the rust removal and painting idea. Just remove loose scaley rust-wire brush time. Paint with "Bridge Primer" ; county and state workers use it. Or use a rust-convertor or phosphoric acid that turns rust, Fe2O3 into hematite, Fe3O4. Either then turns black, completely stops any more rusting and then can be primered and painted. The acid needs the rust there to react to, so do not remove ALL the rust, just the loose stuff. Around here we get Rust Converter from Fleet Farm. I've used this on rusty implements, frames, tractors, etc; but I never parked them over the pond when I did this.

Since you are using a generator, the ground fault is not going to work properly unless you actually have a ground on the generator. Maybe the metal bridge is grounded? Good question but I don't know that I have ever heard of anyone being electrocuted with the exact same conditions that you mention. Then again maybe it is best in this case to not ground the generator and if the line falls in the water the current path will actually be between the two wires in the receptacle or plug or tool. There should be no ground current through the water since neither side of the line is grounded.

Sandblast it. It'll take 2 hours instead of 2 weeks. The shock will come from the joy. Grinding isn't much better than rubbing it with a rock.

You really need to put a good coating on after sandblasting. It can start to rust almost instantly with the slightest bit of moisture. The roughness will make it rust easier as well. It would work but you'd have to prime it right away. If it rained unexpectedly, you'd have toclean it again. Dave

Murphy's law. If it does rain, and it will if you don't want it to, reblasting would take 10 minutes. I've haven't noticed blasted metal rusting any faster than stripped metal. The new paint will be nailed on.

There have been lots of people electrocuted in water not holding a tool in their hand. Lots of cases around boat docks where bad circuits kill people. Be sure to use tested GFCI protection, good cords and as said tie them up out of the water.

I posted a photo of the project in community photos. I reassessed the lenghth and it's more like 60x6ft.Heavy scaly rust with heAVY pitting in approx. 10-15% of surface. Think I will hand scrape and paint it.

the brige is 44 feet long and 6 feet wide . The girders are each 5-6 inches wide and 12 inches in "height". plus som gussetting. the girders vary. Some have paint, some have thick scaly rust.I'll post a photo from home.i may just debride them and coat them with something like tar? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Securing your power cord and using a GFI circuit, as suggested by others, should make you plenty safe.

My GUESS is that, unless you are still holding the tool while it and you are in the water, the electricity in the stream will be so diffuse and short-lived before it pops the breaker (assuming your generator has one) that you probably won't have much electrical energy flowing through you.

If you are holding a wet tool and standing/swiming in the water, then you'd be a more direct path between the electric source and the ground - that would probably hurt.

Hi Brad,

This is an issue I've always wondered about, too. In the movie scene of someone being killed by having an electrical appliance thrown into the bathtub with them, I always wondered if electricity would actually flow through the relatively poor conductor of a human body rather than through the relatively good conductor of dirty bathwater before it blew the fuse or tripped the breaker as it shorted to the plumbing ground. The situation you describe seems even more problematic.

As for the situation with the welding, I have two observations: Aside from the above question of where electrical current in the water would actually go, welding voltage is usually below 20 volts while the arc is going. The voltage at the stinger when there's no arc is closer to 80 volts across the open circuit, but I don't know what it is in relation to earth ground. Second, while some weldors are guys who were trained as physicists, rocket scientists, and brain surgeons, and decided to go into welding instead, many aren't. What a weldor does based on his understanding of electrical engineering issues wouldn't necessarily be the final word on safe operating procedures (although many have enough personal experience to know very well how things work, of course.)

The welder might get a shock but he'd have to be holding both the stinger and ground cable. Welders have a maximum of 90 O.C.V. so they won't kill you. Then can give a good jolt though. I once was repairing an irrigation line on a golf course I worked at. The ground was wet and when I went to get in the hole, I got a buzz just touching the ground! Not even holding any cables. Sombody told me later when it's wet some current will go through the insulation on the cables. If the the welder was in the water and both cables were laying in it as well, I suspect he'd get zapped to some deggree. On the bridge, I doubt it. Mythbusters came to the conclusion that it's hard to get electrocuted in a bath tub because the breaker trips pretty fast. With a generator might be a different case? I think as long as the tool or cord are kept out of the water, there shouldn't be too much trouble if you're careful. Dave

Ground the generator, and install a ground-fault breaker between it and you. Or just tie the cord to the bridge, short enough so if you fall the tool will unplug itself before you hit the water.

Using a short cord would be the easiest solution.


I don't know how dangerous it would be, but I've seen the little hand crank generators (from telephones) bring up a lot of fish. I could only imagine what a 30-60 amp generator with 3000-5000 watts of power would do to a human in a body of water.
