Goofy exhaust manifold washers seem to have a concave surface...more

So you guys know your stuff about torque and motor assembly...I've got another problem...the exhaust manifold bolt washers have a concave shape that (my guess is) allow the expansion of parts to occur without cracking the manifold. Ford wants 4 bucks a bolt w/ washer....I'm actually milling a set of washers but I don't have equipment to check the "compression" rating of the washer. A guy at Ford claims I don't need to use the special washer but I disagree...this engine-manifold is machined fit...no gasket...somethings got to give on expansion...what do you guys think?

Hi Ferg,

You can get alot of those bellville washers from McMaster-Carr (mcmaster.com) order them today, recieve them tomorrow. Prices are decent. Make sure you know the right ratings though. Good luck.

Those belleville washers are used on your Tecumseh aluminum flywheels to tighten them to the crankshaft to prevent cracking the flywheel but the previous information is correct, you will need the correct size from a fastener dealer.

One more thing, keep the anti-sieze off the bolt head and washer or you'll defeat the purpose of the bellevilles spring action. These need to be installed completely dry in order to give the proper working action. Threads of the bolt can be anti-siezed with no problem, use a very light coat.

What you have there are called belleville washers. Technically they are actually springs and are made from special spring alloy or other similar material.

Generally they are used one at a time but can also be stacked to gain greater movement or power. These are quite common items as are bolts to fit that manifold. I assume you know the grade, diameter, length and thread pitch from the old ones so you can go to any good fastener supplier and buy what you need along with the washer (ordered by OD, ID and thickness) for a few bucks, not $4 each.

You are correct, the operation of this engine requires the use of these spring washers and you should use them or run the risk of breaking the manifold or the head. There should also be a specific torque rating for the installation of these bolts, follow it or you will have problems even with the belleville's installed.
