Has anyone purchased one of these scan gauges for their vehicle. They look like they would be a good diagnostic tool besides the other information that is available. They are about $160 on eBay. I am thinking about getting one but would be interested in any feedback from someone who has used one.

I have an original ScanGauge and a ScanGaugeII. I am happy with both of them.

They will give you the trouble codes, which you then need to find online to decode into actual words/sensors, etc.

I've learned better/more economical driving habits from using mine. Always nice to see it pegged at 200mpg coming down a hill :D

Theres a huge difference in price, too...~$200 for the ScanGauge, ~$2000 for a high-quality OBD/OBDII full serial code reader. The ScanGauge, lets face it, is going to be more of a trip computer and gauge cluster then it will be a diagnostic tool (though it -can- act as diagnostic)...the mechanic that does all the work on my vehicles has one of the very spendy code reader kits and, if something needs reading, I stop by his shop and borrow the code reader. If you want serious diagnostic ability, I suggest you find a friend like that.

I'm running one in my 9C1 Impala and use it not only to track fuel economy, but to display useful tidbits of entertaining information, including fuel flow, MAP, Max and average speed, Coolant Temp, instant fuel economy, RPM, TPS and various other things. Well worth the ~$200. And yeah, buy straight from ScanGauge...I ordered mine on a Monday Morning, was billed for it instantly, and it arrived at my cousins place (Where I was staying) Tuesday afternoon. Darn good deal in my books.

Be warned, however...if you want accurate fuel economy readings, you have to fill the tank right up every time you stop for fuel. I do this by nature anyway, but I know some people like to only put $10 or $15 in at a time. That'll screw the ScanGauge up, and trust me, it'll take ages to get it reset!

If you're talking about an OBDII scanner, I bought one at Walmart for around $65.00, It's done everything I've wanted it to.

This is one that you mount on your dash and it can be used as a trip computer or you can read out different digital gauges such as ignition timing, transmission temperature, open/closed loop, intake air temp,etc while you are driving. You can also take it out and use it in another vehicle.

Hi Crem,

I too have been looking at the scan gauge as they now cover all diesels where as before my PSD wasn't covered.

The VW TDI boys have fallen in love with the unit. There using it to obtain good driving habbits to yield very high fuel mileage or hypermileing they've nicknamed it.

I would order direct from the mfg for the same cost tho as I'm not a E-Bay supporter in any way!
