It is a daily driver and been a good 'un since 1990. It has some "backfiring" or popping in the intake when cold. This happened several years ago, and I finally traced it to a bad injector, but only after it finally started to skip. Have any of you experienced this and do you have any good suggestions as how to diagnose the problem? It was recently tuned up, but it made no difference. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a bad plug wire. Are they new?

When the engine is cold & moist, the spark from a bad wire has a good chance to jump out. When the engine runs for a while,it dries off & problem gone.

If it has a mass air flow sensor (MAF),,, take it out and spray the 2 Etty bitty wires that look like Etty bitty springs with brake clean,,, if they are dirty you will see the difference,,, I think it takes a T-20 tamper proof torx driver to remove'em,,, once its hot and cruising down the road press the gas pedal to the floor 2 times,,, this will reset the Baro sensor (part of the MAF),,, its also possible the MAF is just bad,,, go to Advance or Auto Zone and git a new are rebuilt MAF sensor,,, if it don't fix it take it back,,, keep your old one till ya know,,, ADV. is good to take parts back.

Your problem is most likely a lean condition,,, MAF, vacuum leak,,,low fuel pressure,,,bad coolant temp sensor) I don't expect the EGR,,, a EGR problem would not go away when it got hot,,, I will B at war memorial stadium next Friday, Saturday and Sunday if you want me to take a quick look,,, if you can git hold to a sacn tool yjat would help,,, I think,,, early Ford EEC did not have a menu to scan.

Thanks, Hobo. Good to hear from you. My daughter drives this car now and it has been a good 'un, 255,000 to 260,000 miles. The poppin' goes away once it warms up. It has good power and gas mileage does not seem to be hurtin'. I will try your suggestion and then others ifn' they don't pan out. I hope you and your family are well. Hard for us to go many places with mom in assisted living. Take care.

Dear Jim,
As you said when you have a dead miss the problem is easier to find. If you have good spark to a dead cylinder and a good spark plug along with good compression then the most likely problem is a bad injector. However, a bad valve guide or a bad cam shaft lobe or a vacuum leak often will not show up with a compression test. For diagnosis of an intermittent problem after the above has all been checked along with a scan of computer codes, I take the injectors out and take them to a shop where the spray pattern and flow of the injectors can be definitively checked. You are correct, the 3.0 liter Taurus did not have an E.G.R. valve for one or two years. However, 90% of them do have one.

Thanks Tom43. I will print all comments to remind me of what everyone said. It does not do it when it warms up. The first time I discovered an injector was the problem, I had run a compression test and all cylinders were good. I tested for spark and had plenty so I changed that one particular plug and wire agin and agin. On a Hail Mary attempt, I tried the injector and that was the problem.

I had a similar problem with that engine and it turned out to be a stuck open EGR valve.

Thanks for the comeback, tec4. Mine does not have an EGR valve, unless it is located somewhere besides on top of the intake manifold.
