Yesterday, I was grinding with my Dewalt angle grinder and sparks starting coming from it internally and then it quit. Took it to a local place that rebuilds power tools. They said it was junk, not rebuildable.

I need to buy a new one. The last one I had was a Milwaukee and I fried that one too, after a few years.

Was looking at a Hitachi today. They are supposed to have a good reputation. Anybody got any opinions? Just wanted to try something different.

I'm with HAY...I use these all the time and buy 'em up when HArbour Freight puts them on sale for $9.95...I buy two at a clip and usually get about 18 months of hard use out of them doing roll cage and stock car sheet metal work before they crap out.
Some folks like expensive tools- I'm addicted to cheap tools that get the job done, cheaply.

I got a used Hitachi a few years ago and I see it is wearing out...the cord at the back is getting awfully frayed from all the use. I'm gonna tape it up and you can ask me this question in another year or two. Theres a Milwaukee apart out in the weld shop and a fairly new Dewalt lying here behind me that quit. I noticed the Chinese imports have an extra set of brushes with them and the carbon looks awfully soft...like it would wear quickly. Is it because the copper on the commutator is soft and they don't want it to wear quicker than the brushes? Got to be some reason. I have one of those old dandies too, it is a Sioux that I drilled out three twisted off hub studs for...I think it was in 1968. After years of hard use, I took it apart , cleaned it and put grease in the head miter gears...then the head run real hot. I had to remove about half of the grease and replace it with 90 wt oil. It's so tough, I just use 9" wheels for hogging a lot of metal off. I think the cord has been replaced on it two or three times from getting into it with the wheel or getting frayed. Most of the other tools are red. ohfred

I posted this to the original message:

"Well, if that's the case, make a trip to Home Depot. They've got a 2pack special on bosch 4.5" grinders for $79, they're regularly $69 each."

I recently finished a project using one of my bargins to remove some adhesive residue from a floor using the B&D open mesh SOS looking pads. 4.5-5 hrs of operation later, one of the Bosch 1375-01 grinders I bought now refuses to turn on. They have some sort of warranty program in place, we're still waiting on a response from the company. I'm not overly thrilled with the units, these are the type that the switch locks on with your thumb vs. the paddle type.

Hi Cliff,

Great minds, same channels, etc., etc., etc. I posted jmixigo's post in its entirety below.

I've given that story a lot of thought, trying to figure out if there's anything about the circumstances that would make Bosch not clearly the best angle grinder available. All I've been able to come up with is that Bosch might have features that would help it withstand abusive handling better than other brands, without necessarily making it outlast others under normal usage. Most of us will never face a situation where time is so critical (getting an assembly line running again, as I assume was the case for jmixigo) that tools are totally expendable. Bosch tools are not cheap, and a person might not want to pay extra for a tool that could withstand a lot of abuse if he knew he would almost never abuse it. That's the only thing I've been able to think of.

All the best, Stan

Stan,

I agree that there must be something about Bosch that makes it stand up to abuse better. I can't imagine exactly what it would be. Better heat removal I would guess. I haven't priced one to buy. I just found the thread interesting.

That said, I am still using the DeWalt I bought many, many years ago. But I usually don't run it for more than a few minutes at a time.

Make sure you get one with a paddle-type switch that is easy to use with gloves, and does NOT lock in the ON position.

My experience has mostly been with DeWalt (4.5 and 7-inch - so far all good news) but my dad has a Makita with a little switch that you push with your thumb which is tough to use and since it is difficult to use, you want to lock it in ON, which it does easily.

I was wire brusing with the thing once and was using it locked ON much of the time for the above stated reason. At one point it jumped out of my hands and wound itself into and up my shirt sleave, and took off a thin layer of skin about 2 inches by 5 inches. Luckily, I did not have it locked in the ON position at the time, else it would have been pretty ugly.

I have several small grinders-Milwaukee, Dewalt, Makita, Craftsman, etc. Bought a new Bosch last week and just ordered a second one already-seems like a nice machine. Too early to tell about reliability, but the guard sold me. Push a lever, and the guard turns to whatever angle required. Turn it all the way around, and it slips off, all without tools.

i usually don't buy tools from harbor freight tool co., but i did buy a 4 1/2" grinder and it has been great. now i don't use it everyday, but often enough that it gets a workout. i think i paid about $9.95 plus $4.95 for extra grinding wheels. maybe it's just a good one. i have heard lots of scare stories about harbor freight tools.

I usually avoid the super cheap HF tools, but the Little "paddle switch" 4-1/2 grinders that normally sell in the high $20's and usually sell for about $18 on sale have been an exceptonal value. Tough, reliable, exactly the same as one Black & Decker model for 1/2 the money. Have only been bit once by HF, and then only because my greed for the lowest price overpowered my good judgment to buy their mid range tools. This was a $10 timing light that works but is pretty low powered.

Same here I buy the el cheapos. I don't use them everyday but I am just on my second one in about 7 years. It is actually a warranty replacement as the first one quit within warranty period.
I had Makitas before that and they seemed to last maybe a bit longer than the el cheapos.

I have a Dewalt. The first one I received as a gift died so they replaced it. I haven't had the second one long enough to form an opinion on. My Dad has a Makita and it's three times the grinder mine is. The catch is look where it's made at. The good more expensive ones are made in Japan. The cheaper model is made in China. My next grinder will either be a Makita, Metabo or Bosch.

They key isn't which one to get its HOW OLD OF ONE YOU CAN FIND. yes the old B&D grinders are superb, the new ones are junk. My dad has 2 old (25yrs) B&D's and they are still going after much hard work, my new dewalt is working good but I would try to find some old grinders at a pawn shot flea markets that have been used and will continue to be used and last you along time. But I have heard the new bosh and metabo are on the top of the list.

I used to be the world's biggest fan of DeWalt power tools. No more. Since B&D took them over and they went for the yuppie market, they simply are not as rugged as they used to be.

Lot of good advice below, particularly as regards proper use. I work in a cannery and do quite a bit of metalwork fabrication and repair. We use mostly Makita and Milwaukee, both hold up well. We also have Bosch stuff (don't recall any grinders, but all of our battery drills are Bosch) and are well pleased with them.

I've got 2 Milwaukees (7" and 4.5") that I got out of a recycle bin about 12 years ago. The cords had been chewed off and they were rusted inside WD40 and surgery on the cords and they are still going strong. I've got cheap matching ones for the son to use (he'd tear up a sledgehammer)and as a loaner that work real well too. Gotta remember to let the machine do the work and not you (don't force or bear down, as you see, it ruins machines).

You have killed two that are usually dependable.Ive been using a B&D for many years. It needs a new cord but has given good service.Bearing down too hard will kill any small motor.Im still using a skilsaw and 3/8 drill I bought new in 1958.They have gone through building a house, a shop and 100s of picnic tables.

Yesterday I rebuilt a Makita 4" model 9501B.Had two of them and they seem very well built good bearings and heavy gears.Looks like the main reason these were given up for dead was the brushes.Turned the commutator, lubed bearings, bearings.I still need some parts so if anyone has a junker let me know.

Hi Gleanerguy,

On 4/7/07 jmixigo posted this:

"A while back there was a post here about grinders, which ones are good, bad, good value, etc.. I just finished a job at a Norboard OSB plant where we had to replace 656 feet of welded in 1/2" X 5" angle iron. Eleven guys started with 24 gringers and 250 pounds of cutting discs. Nineteen hours later 3 guys had quit, 5 pounds of discs were left, 37 burned out grinders lay in a pastboard box, and there were hardly any 4 or 5 inch grinders for sale in Valley Alabama. Only ONE of the original 24 grinders survived. A Bosh. Metabos, Milwaukees, DeWalts, Ryobis, Makitas, Kawasakis, an some I prolly forget all bit the dust. At the end of this deal, after the machine was back up an runnin, ther were only 6 functional grinders left, all Bosh. And that original Bosh that started out an survived the whole job was bought at a pawn shop for $20.00. I know what to buy now."

After I read that I started looking for Bosch grinders on eBay. I bid on quite a few and only got one---and that was at almost full retail. They don't seem to go cheap.

All the best, Stan

I don"t know why they said it"s not rebuildable, it most certainly is. Heck, I"ve done it to mine. From your description, you probably did nothing more than break the brushes.

I have a makita 4 inch that I'm very happy with. I bought a cheap clarke 4-5 years ago just to put the wire brush on so I wouldn't have to change all the time. Ended up leaving the wire brush on the makita and grinding with the clarke because its 1/2 inch bigger. I've used it quite a bit with no problem and I don't know how much the thieves used when they had it, had a big cutoff blade on it when I got it back from the cops. Lee

Look at a Bosch. I have 3 - a Milwaukee, a DeWalt and a Bosch - all 4-1/2" grinders.

Do a search on grinders on this board - that's where I decided to try a Bosch.

My Bosch is by far the newest of the 3 but it seems to have more guts than either of the other two...and I usually prefer Milwaukee. I'm not easy on tools but I don't abuse them - Bosch seems to be pretty tough!

I would not recomend a Hitachi. I have own two and niether one lasted two weeks. Bought the first one and in the first week, motor was smokin and done. Took it back thinking I got a dud, the second week with the second one and it did the same thing. I have got two Milwaukee's that I have had for 3 years and no problems as of yet. Metabo's are great too.

I have one from HF for about five years. Paid $15.00 for it and it has been absolutely great. I have used it for restoring a 8N Ford and now an Allis B. Also for building eight trailers. I bought four at the time, thinking I would need a back up sooner or later. Eventually gave the other three away as Christmas gifts. I don't use one every day, all day, but I would certainly buy this same grinder again. It does a very good job for me.
