Trucks are tools right? I just got an 87' chevy truck at a too good price as it died in the company parking lot and the kid didn't want to pay the tow charge. Anyhow it's sitting in my driveway after I paid the tow charge. This has the throttle body Fuel injected 305 or 350 I haven't determined which but it apparently has no spark even with a spark plug cable and spark plug attached to the coil tower and grounded. I haven't tinkered these in several years and cannot find my book on them. I suspect the ignition module in the distributor may be bad as I had several of these fail back when I ran GM trucks years ago. I cannot remember how I tested the module. I do have power to the ignition coil when the key is on.
Anyone remember the quick and dirty method of testing a module short of changing it? (PITA to change as I remember)

At the 4 pin connector at the dist their will B a purple wire with a white tracer,,, back probe it with a pin,,, take a 12V test lite,,, connect to the battery positive post,,, touch the tip of the tester to the pin momentarily,,, with ignition key on you should git spark out of the coil tower and injector pulse,,, if so then the computer and wiring is good,,, look in the dist for you problem,,, if not remover the connectors at the computer a few times to insure a good connection,,, if the connection is good and the check engine lite werks,,, possible bad computer,,, make sure the check engine light werks,,, if it don't check fuses first,,, been bit cuzz i got in a hurry,,, had a bad fuse are bad connection in the fuse panel. I can do the test at the module,,, best I remember its the P connection the module,,, confirm the check engine lite first tho,,, this is for EFI,,, carburetor set up is different

I'm interested in how the fuel injection may be tied into the ignition via the computer. I've got the distributor back together and good spark now but still it won't start. I took the 2 wire connectors apart at the gas tank and tested them with a test light and have no power. When you turn the key on don't you usually hear the fuel pump run up pressure? Usually do on Fords and GM MPFI systems. This is the first time I've had to monkey with Chevy TBI. Thanks

The gray wire is the one to look for power on.You'll need a helper as there is power for only about 2 seconds after key is turned on.

Also can you hear the fuel pump relay click on and off with each key cylcle or momentary starter engagement? Relay is on firewall pass side under hood.

Thanks Brad, I disconnected the battery to reset the ECM. Reconnected it and the pump came right on when I turned the key on. A couple cranks and it started up and ran fine. Life is good!

I hope you got the title signed over first. I acquired a Jeep the same way, that had sat in a barn, untouched for five years, and the owner was to be evicted if he didn't move it. I towed the Jeep home, changed the starter and radiator, fixed a cut gas line, and it started right up. The next day the guy had his father come tell me "they" wanted the Jeep back. I refused, but it left a sour taste between friends and it took over a year before I got title.

Actually, really easy to remove ign mod for testing. 5.5mm(or 7/32) screws for the cap, pull rotor straght up,unplug(easy on the wires) & remove module. Most auto part stores will test.

More than likely the module.Next would be the pick-up coil.~brad

Brad, thanks! I think I gotter figgered out. I pulled the module out and the plug connector from the pickup coil was corroded. I wanted to replace the cap and rotor anyway so I took the module with me to Autozone and it tested good. Old Al said 'you might need to clean up this corrosion' OK no problem Al. I'll post back.
