My wife thinks I am crazy. My oldest son is turning six and I want to but him a nice toolbox for is birthday. Since his birth I have purchased him a tool for every birthday, christmas, and easter. She thinks its getting out of hand. I just want him to have a good set of his own tools to take good care of and respect when he is ready to use them. She doesn't see the need for it all, we already work on tractors together and he loves turning wrenches. Am I crazy or pushing him? He seems to love it now, is her point.

You asked this question on a tool forum?

What did you think folks were going to say?

Yep, wonderful idea. I keep a separate tool box in the shop full of tools for the kids. Haven't gotten around to getting them their "own" tools yet, but that will be coming soon.

My oldest (6) enjoys screwing screws into a board. I just start a bunch of screws, and he screws them the rest of the way in.

Keep an eye on them, however. When my older brother was a lot younger, he sawed a wooden wagon hitch pole in half. Dad wasn't very happy.

Cannot go wrong with tools, toolboxes, mechanical education. I got my first set probably 9 years old. Went through radio and TV. Auto mechanics, plumbing and electrical. Can still make money at 64 years old and disabled on good days. Safety first with kids, though. Girls and boys!

Minor rant - 'scuse me! in reply to Mark W., 02-07-2008 07:55:47
I retired from a power company. The last 10 years I was there the turbine crews were all about 50 years old. Teach the kid to enjoy working on stuff! In another 10 years there won't be anyone from this country that that can work on a turbine!

As for the MTV type quick and short pics to go with the "music" they play - it's trained kids to have the attention span of a goldfish! Like the newest version of personal computer/phone/camera/CD player - WHEN did it become a *necessity* for a kid to *entertained* every minute they're not asleep?!! It'd be a shame for them to have to actually spend time *thinking*, huh?!!!!!

If he likes tools for toys, go for it!

When I graduated from grade school the thing was that all the kids parents bought them a watch. My dad bought me a craftsman set of 3/8 and 1/4 sockets in a nice box with a set of combo wrenches.

The watches are all gone. The tools I still have.

How about buying each one their own tractor? Give them their own project to work on with those tools.

I hope she doesn't want to do what my wife did. Buy them Game Boy's , Nintendo's. They get hooked on these and then you can't get them to do anything else ! I'd say if he likes them and you use them together then there is no better gift you could give him or you.

At the age of six I was a specialist at tearing apart wind-up alarm clocks. Never go any of them together, but I had fun with them.

My daughter was my helper/fetcher when she was little and had a lot of mechanical ability. I had her doing electrical wiring by the time she was 9. I bought her a car for college and told her that she had to do all of the maintenance and repair work on it, which she did. Now she's a superintendent for a world-wide construction company. She finished her stint on the Bay Bridge in San Francisco and is now on another bridge project in North Carolina.

We have a 6-year-old son and Santa brought him a really nice tool box and lots of good tools for Christmas..... .that is the only thing the child asked for, so have at it. And continue to teach him how to use them and care for them, that is training that will benefit him from now on. The suggestion of books is a good one, also Baxter really like watching DVD's on building tractors and such. Take care and have a good'un. CL

When my daughter turned 18 and getting ready to go to college, I bought a tool box and all the neccesary tools to do handyman jobs around her apartment. She was thrilled with the present. Shes now married, teaching school and expecting her 1st child in July. She still uses those tools I gave her, and tells her husband to stay out of them.

Some of the big box stores sell pink tools for women. Is it because they think women prefer pink? No, it's because their husbands won't borrow their pink tools.

I bought my daughter a tool set for college too. I also got her a box full of nylon tie-wraps, bungee cords, extension cords, surge protectors, tv cables and connectors. Duct tape also of course.

She is always happy that she has the tools and the room mates rely on her to do the wrenching when necessary.

She still can't fix her car though.....

I should have done the same with our daughter. Just never thought of it.

However, one day when she was about 6, she decided she didn't need training wheels on her bicycle anymore so she found a pair of pliers and took them off. My wife and I didn't even know about it until she rode past and it dawned on us there were no training wheels on the bike.

I believe it would be more beneficial to your son (or any young person) if you gave him a book that he has interest in -- teaching them a craft going along with the tools in hand would be smart when he's into reading better --- Keep up the good work....

Tools and how to use them last a lifetime in reply to Mark W., 02-07-2008 07:55:47
When the time came for each of my girls to leave for college, they already had a fair foundation of spending time with Dad fixin', buildin', or otherwise piddlin' with tools.
I gave each of them, in turn, an old white sock, with a couple screwdrivers, pliers, channel-locks, and crescent wrench. I heard frequently they were to "go-to" kids on the dorm floor when things needed fixing. That started in 1990. I helped the youngest one move a couple years ago and in a box I carried was now a well-worn sock and those tools.
Like all other knowledge we pass on to our children -- its a gift for a lifetime. Keep the tools going for him.

That's a great idea, plus a side benefit is that you'll be able to find your tools when you need them.

I still have a pair of channel lock pliers and a Crescent Wrench that I got when I was about 10. those and some tools from my Pawpaw and dad are my most treasured tools.

I wish my father had done this! I have bought all the tools in my own toolbox and would much rather have had the tools instead of some of the junk I got. Tell your wife it is an investment in your sons future, the kind that most boys now a days do not get.

I got my first set to call my own, a Craftsman one, when I was about 11. Still have them all. If he's enjoying it now, seems hes already caught the sickness. The best part for him is probably just doing stuff with you. That was the best part for me, doing things with my grandpa.

Hi Mark,

You said "oldest son" which suggests that you have other children, too. I'd suggest that you do the same thing for all your children, sons and daughters alike. The hurt of being a less favored child never goes away. Favoring one child over the others is totally unnecessary, and it can really blow up in your face. The way your oldest son feels about you now is absolutely no guarantee of how he's going to feel about you when he's twenty. Why not give all your children the opportunity to feel that way about you---there's almost no extra effort involved.

All the best, Stan

Your not crazy. I have three grandsons and when I went to hospital to see each of them I had a tool box and a set of Craftsman combination wrenchs with me. It has been 12 years now since the first one. Each get a tool on their birthday and also for Christmas. I've had to buy the oldest one a larger tool box. I have to keep a spreadsheet on the computer to keep tract.

Keep up the good work.

I am going to have a new Grandaughter born in June of this year. I want to get her one of those pink farmall M pedal tractors, the wife thinks I am getting ahead of myself. But I can just picture that little girl having a blast with it when she's about 2, Who knows I might paint one of my cub tractors pink for her. I saw a purple one at last year's Red Power Round up.
