Set up for SS welding. I have welded aluminum and steel but never stainless sheets. I have a miller mig, a hobart tig, a bottle of � Argon-CO2, a bottle of argon, stainless wire and filler rod. How does welder settings and setups differ from mild steel?

Hi Circus,

100%AR works well as a cover gas for just about all Tig welding while using DCEN. About 15cft/hr is common and if in a closed area then 10cft/hr is more than enough.

There are some SS that require tri-mix while Mig welding. One of the most common types would be 316 in this class.

Using Tig you don't need to add a filler rod on alot joints as you can obtain the filler metal required from the center of the metal thickness. If you've had alot of Tig practice you will also not "sugar" thru on the backside of the joint thus no back purge gas is required.

To easy accomplish the above suggested method, pre-tack your pipe joint about every 1", (this keeps warpage to a minimum), then tilt the pipe at approx a 60� vertical angle. Start Your weld pudle at the top and hold a steady arc until you see the molten muddle rise to the surface then move downwards. This method produces a strong seal weld without adding additional filler metal with just a small spot of sugar on the inside.

No matter what welding process that is used, you will need to "round" the pipe on a anvil after welding. A rail iron works great as a anvil. With Tig you can usually use a wood mallet to work the welded seam to round the pipe. On Mig/stick then a steel hammer is required as there's more weld metal to displace to round the pipe.

SS does oxidize just like any other metal. Be sure to pre-clean the joint with a SS wire powered brush to "white" metal before welding. This keeps the finished bead apparence very uniform.

In our shop at work we use tri-mix for mig and straight argon for tig on stainless. Definatly prefer the tig for anything that has to have cosmetic appeal. If it's purely functional the mig makes a nice stong weld a lot faster than with a tig.

I have welded SS with a mig. When I bought my Miller 200 I was looking to do some SS and was told by the welding company you need a Tri-mix of gas for MIG/SS. I know there is a trimix for SS ONLY but I have forgot what it it. The place I bought my welder had a trimix that could be used on MS and SS. They called it GPR. It was a 49% Argon, 49% helium, 2% oxygen. I was told you needed a little oxygen when miging SS for penatration. If you use a pure argon or helium the bead will set on top of the metal. I went with the GPR to reduce my start-up cost.The company that had the GPR mix was called Oxygen Service Company who has since been bought out. I do not know if the GPR mix is still available.

Use an almost pure nickle rod if your making a part you will polish.For hobby parts I just tig weld with no gas backup.If you make say a coil cover the ugly side of the weld goes in and cant be seen the out side gets polished down so anything goes.I bought this rod for 35 bucks a lb but it polished out slightly better than the stainless fender trim I had to repair holes in.You sound like you just want to practice,ok good luck.

I would agree with TIG welding. Use argon for shielding gas NO Co2 @ 10-15 CFH flow rate. You will need about 10% less amps than mild steel for the same thickness base metal. The weld should be shinney SS to copper color if blue to black to hot & or bad shielding gas flow. Clean with SS brush and good fitup are very important also filler size.It can be kinda sticky to weld. You can also use a coppper backer on thin stuff to keep the heat dissipated SS does a poor job of transfering heat.If MIG you need a different gas a tri mix.Doug

Would reccomend the TIG over the mig , and there is no difference exept for back gassing the weld joint, with the argon shielding gas. What are you planning on welding??? Milking equipment should definately done by tig to save extra work with a grinder later, and it still may not pass the milk inspector. You may want to check in at the hobart or miller websites for examples of back gassing stainless to avoid contamination from the back side of the weld....Good luck Shawn

It depends on what you're welding. Not all SS TIG needs argon backing. Unless it's pipe, there is no way to contain the Argon. You can get carbide precipitation on the back side of welds on thin sections. It would help to know what type of SS it is and go from there. Dave

SS is from a salvage yard which I'm building a SS heat exchanger for a SS power LP flue vent. Temperatures below 350 degrees and not food related. Just condensation.

I'd just TIG weld it and wouldn't worry too much about it. If the weld looks good it should be fine. Dave
