I am talking about a 1 to 10 KW wind turbine to generate electricity for a farm, small business, or home. If so, I would sure like to hear your experience with them. Thanks.

Paul

Hi Paul,

You provided your e-mail address below in this posting. In doing so, you might be needlessly exposing yourself to a lot of additional junk e-mail/spam, or worse. Apparently there are programs that sleazeballs employ to search the net for personal e-mail addresses posted in the clear. What a world we live in, huh?

Anyway, it shouldn't be necessary to post your e-mail address here to let people contact you directly. Your e-mail option is set to "open" on this site and it works very well. Another thing you can do is to alter your address slightly, then provide instructions how to change it to the real address. For example, you could change the first letter from an h to an a, then say, "Here's my e-mail address. Just change the first letter from a to h." That's enough to foil search programs. It doesn't matter that anyone reading it can misuse it; nobody can afford to pay humans to scour the web like a program can. The average payback per address is so miniscule that humans, even in India or Bangladesh, would be hundreds or thousands of times too costly.

All the best, Stan

Or, simple get a "disposable" email address, such as a Hotmail address.

I openly post mine, [email protected], and get VERY LITTLE spam.

I understand GOOGLE'S "gmail" has an even better spam filter.

If worse comes to worse, and the spammers DO take over, simply set up a new free account.

Big Coulee, huh? Boy, that takes me back. Haven't been there in years. Used to be a decent swimming spot, but I recall it a little differently...

Favorite PARKING spot, Eh? (Or were you talking about ICE fishing?) Or, a "frigid fish???

Did you ever "cross paths" with any of our Bisbee gals? I know of a couple who wound up over your way!

If you're looking just to save money, it's not going to happen. If you want some security or independence, or live in an off-grid area - that's a differenet story.

I have two 1000 watt wind-turbines along with a 5400 watt solar-electric system.

Average annual wind here is listed at 7 MPH.
The reality is - we get a lot of 20 - 60 MPH winds here in the winter, and almost nothing in the summer.

Some of the best wind generators need 7 MPH to make any power. And, many don't work well with grid-tie which is probably what you really need.

Keep in mind that most wind generators spend a lot of time making nothing, and at other times make a lot more power than you can use. So, you MUST have a way to capture the excess - or you just lose it. If grid-tie is allowed where you live, it can be the best option. This way, the power company is forced to save your excess power for you, and let you have it back when you can use it - with no line charges.

There's a lot more to it all - and this is not the place to be writing essays on it. For the most part, it's not cost-effective unless your state gives you cash incentives that you've already paid for anyway (taxes and power bill). In my case, New York paid half the cost - otherwise I'd never done it.

Nice thing is - when the sun seems to be the worst and my solar-electric is not doing anything - the wind is often at its best.

tractormarkb--how old is your turbine and how high is your tower? Also, what wind classification do you live in?

Also, my email is: [email protected] if anyone would like to contact me directly.

Thanks, Paul

A friend up the road has one. It generates enough electricity for him and he also sells some to the electric company.
His only bad experience is that it has been damaged two times that I know of from storms (shreds the blades) and each time the cost to repair was about $10,000. He said he has a rider on his insurance policy to cover storm damage.
Otherwise he said he has no complaints.

I have a 800 watt AC turbine. It spins when we get a good north-eastern wind other than that it just tells me which way the wind is blowing. I am dissapointed with its performance. The turbine turnes easily and freely, just not consistantly.

My turbine is 40' tall way above the trees and buildings in the area and it is new, unfortunatly. I live off grid and was really hoping for this to work.
