I just bought a 74 Ford F500 with 330 engine, currently using 10w40 oil and has some blowby and white smoke from exhaust. Would using 20w50 help at all or cause more problems. Rather stay away from the "snake oils".
Thanks

Upon further investigation it looks to have a blueish tint to the smoke. There is not alot to the point where you can"t see through it. 50 ft away you can"t even tell. I will go ahead with the suggestions and try a compression check. I went ahead and changed the oil because I don"t how long whatever was in there was in there. I put 10w40 in for now. I did take if for a quick ride and after I got back could not see any sign of smoke. Later when I started it there was a little smoke again. I will let you know the results of the compression readings. Thanks to everyone for all the great suggestions!!

Heloo roockie.

Sounds like a coolant leak with the white smoke.
If it is the smell would be a sweet one.
All of the other post gave you the other things to look for.
I would not go to a heavier oil that is recommended for that engine!, bearings clearances
are the reason why. If it was oil leaking into the combustion chamber it would be blue in color.
Guido.

Seems to me that auto trans fluid will make white smoke also. Does this have an auto trans with a vacuum, modulator on it? busted diaphragm passing fluid thru to the carb.

I know for a fact that a hole in the modulator diaphram will generate large clouds of white smoke :D

Blowby blows at the cankcase vent. The exhaust would be unaffected except maybe a little oil.

Are you sure that the smoke is white? You may want to check your oil for signs of water, as well as look in your radiator for oil. As others have mentioned, you should also conduct a pressure test of the engine. If you notice that one, or two adjacent cylinders are notably lower than the rest, you are looking at a failed head gasket, or crack in either the head or block. If most, or all, the cylinders are lower than they should be, you are looking at rings and valve seals etc. I am aware that some people are unable to distinquish between white and blue smoke. You could also check your tail pipe for water and the smell of anti freeze, but remember that the cold weather will cause some condensation. In most cases, the condensation will be minimal, and there should not be anti freeze in condensation. While a thicker oil may help keep the oil pressure up in an older engine, It generally doesn't fill in the cylinder wall wear that causes blow by.

Start with a compression test.

Make certain some tinkerer didn't toss the thermostat. There should a 195F stat in there, a 15psi cap and 50/50 mix. If it's warm try a straight 40,50 or 60 weight oil.

A good first step is to run a compression test and a leak-down test to find out just what problems you're dealing with. Then you'll know if a complete overhaul is needed or something less.

Might help just a bit. For a while. If you've got a serious case of blowby, only thing that'll fix it is a set of new rings, and whatever else needed to bring engine back in specs. (sleeves, rebore, pistons, etc.)
