Where can I get some cabon monoxide? The detector is getting old and it's never sounded except the buzzer works with the test button.

Find someone who smokes. Blow some cigarette or cigar smoke into the detector.

I worked at a blast furnace in a steel mill for 30 years.(Lots of CO in these facilities). We would use this method on our CO detectors when we did not have time to have them checked by the pros.

I ruined a couple of 110volt testers by using a generator temporarily. The gen was putting out 130volts. Spec sheet confirmed this was design. First indication was when light buld exploded and stuck a piece into my arm. THEN got out the voltmeter.

The Natural Gas Co-op that supplies our furnace told us last fall that CO2 detectors have a lifespan of 5-7 yrs.Dan

If there's even a slight possibility that it doesn't work, trash it. Yes you can put it by an exhaust pipe but, that's a very high concentration of carbon monoxide. That won't tell you if it will go off with a much lower concentration which will still kill you. What is the value of your life or the lives of your family? I'm on the local fire dept. and have gone to many false alarms, those are great. We've also shown up at the other type. If you think that we are impressed because you are laying there dead, you're wrong. Some detectors aren't worth buying. Don't buy one because it's cheaper than the other one. Talk to the people who sell them to find out which one is best for you. If they don't know, go to another store. If it's over five years old, put it in the trash. Be safe, not sorry or dead.

What I would do is put the detector in the garage and start up a car and see if it goes off. Of course be sure the wife and kids are at grandmas house and be sure that you dont kill yourself.

There used to be a kit that you could use, you but the detector in a bag with a small chemical pack you sealed the bag and broke the pack open to test the detector, Home Depot used to carry them, good luck.

Hi Circus,

From the questions that you have been asking, I strongly urge you to buy some text refferences on the subject to fully understand the combustion process as anything less will surely get you or your family killed. CO is nothing to mess around with, it's just that deadly.
A great one source refference is:

Modern Refrigeration

Goodhart & Wilcox

About $50

ABC news a couple years ago did a news article about CO detectors that stated 60% of the detectors tested "failed" new right out of the box.

There's only one 100% cure for reducing CO and that's outside fresh air cross ventalation as CO is a by-product of any combustion process.

Hi T-bone Thanks for the links. I'm not planning anything stupid. Just wondered if the thing worked. In fact the solar collectors you advised me earlier about work fine. Didn't realize that in Wis. the sun never shines in Dec. & Jan. Duh

I believe exhaled breath is carbon dioxide. Not carbon monoxide

yes, but, too much carbon dioxide will trigger ANY carbon monoxide alarm.

We test ours at the factory with a fork truck. Ours plug into 110 so we plug it into an extention cord and place close to it.
Like below your car, tractor, or lawn mower would do the same thing.

I wouldn't even goof around with it if it's questionable or old.Not worth it.

Check with your local fire dept for brand/model suggestions. ~brad

Try setting it near the tailpipe of your car and see if it sets off.

Carbon Monoxide is a odorless, colorless POISON gas. i don't think anyone would sell it.
