I've been fiddling with a 96' taurus with the 3.0L V6, car has 150K on it. Heads were redone last year or 2 years ago. Car has no heat, I put a new thermostat in it, it was very low on coolant, as in nothing came out when I pulled the t-stat housing. New t-stat and filled with coolant, car gets luke warm after running for 20 mins..the fans will keep kicking on and off. Not sure where to go from here, what do you guys thing? thanks, -Mike

Get the car to operating temp and feel the two hoses going into the firewall. with the heat on full inside the car, both hoses should be pretty warm. If only one is warm the you have a plugged heater core. You should be running the green anti-freeze-don't run the orange stuff in your 96. The orange stuff needs to be flushed and replaced every 50-60k miles. Otherwise it will break down and coagulate.

Anxiously reading others replys. My sister has not been able to get her Taurus to make heat for two winters now. Blend air door binding and/or TCP failure was pretty common on these but I've checked the blend air door and it is working fine. New thermostat. Others have checked heater core (not plugged). Never pulled off the water pump though; maybe next time I visit her.

Harbor Freight heater for now.

Just went thru that with wife's Blazer, with climate control system. Took to a good mechanic with one of those do-all computer service units. Found the thermostat was opening too early. Also back flushed heater core with water, and got a slug of stuff out. With his instrument, he was able to track the electric door, opening and closing without having to tear dash apart. Best I could get out of heater was 70 degree air before, was running 115 degree air after - made my ears burn!

My friend had a Pontiac with a similiar problem. Was a blown head gasket.

No one mentioned an air bound heater core.It was common to put a bleeder valve in the heater hose line.My 77 pickup has one in it.Both heater hoses should be hot when the engine is warm.Newer cars have a mickey mouse water control valve.50s Fords had a vacuum controled valve that leaked engine coolant in to the intake manifold .

The air coming from the ducts is luke warm briefly, then is cold. The temp gauge only makes it about a 1/4 of the way up, the upper radiator hose doesnt get hot enough for it to be uncomfortable to hold. then thats it Doesnt make alot of sense to me, the impeller corroding away sounds like a possibility though.

if all else fails, pull the hoses to the heater core and breifly start the engine, you should get a good spray of antifreeze coming out from the engine, if not, your water pump impeller is probably worn away from corrosion. here is a taurus water pump that happened to.

Saw one of those in a fellow student's Taurus at the vocational school about a year ago. believe it or not, the impeller was actually less there than the one in the photo.

So that's apparently NOT uncommon on a Taurus.

Mike, had a problem on my 3.0 engine in a Ford Ranger. It turned out to be the plastic water control valve in the heater supply hose under the hood. You can check it by turning your heat in the car to max and look at the position of the control rod. Turn the heat to the min postion and check the postion of the control rod. If there is no movement, then the valve is not working. You can plug off the vacuum line with a match stick and set the rod in any position just to get the hot water flowing if it is a bad contol valve. Hope this helps.

Mike I have the same problem on a 02 with the v6. I flushed heater core with water put vise grip on cross over hose water came out eater side of core as fast as went in. Talked to ford shop, told me blend door was not working, the only way to check it out it to PULL the dash out of it. Coud be up around $1000.00. Last year I went with out heat, this year I bought a 600 anp elect. heater, hooked up to battery, turn on whin I start and shout off when get out. Hav"t worn coveralls yet this year.

My vote is for plugged heater core.Common on these 'cause of by-pass hose at firewall allowing a low flow volume thru core. The rest returns to engine.Get it(core) flushed and should be OK.If coolant is dirty,it will happen again.

Did 2 Taurus' and 1 Sable last week.

Mike, that sounds like a classic case of a heater core being blocked. I clear them by taking both hoses off and back flushing it with an air hose. Blow it out add some water and hit it again. Hook it back up and ready to go.

If this doesn't cure it then its something else, but this is a $0 try.

You may have a bad actuator (the motor that opens and closes the heater blend door), the blend door shaft may be broken at the top where the motor attaches, or your heater core may be leaking. Search for Ford heater blender door and Ford heater core leak. You'll find some references to this problem and how some people have fixed them. Since you are low on coolant, I would suspect the heater core.

I am assuming that the engine gets to temperature since the fans are cycling, but the heater just wont't heat. Had a Ford truck do the same thing once and after much aggravation found that a pen had fallen through the defroster vent and jammed the damper open in the heater box. Just a thought.

I had a heater problem on a used Chevy truck that had been used in construction and I found 10 or 15 pens and pencils blocking the door flap and was dumping the heat overboard. They must 've threw their pens and pencils up on the dash and they fell down where the heater was. Hal

If the engine is getting up to operating temperature your heater core may have blockage
preventing the coolant circulation through the heater. Feel the hoses on the heater to see if one is hotter than the other. Hal

Hey Mike, On some of those vehicles the T/Stat housing is higher than the radiator cap. You need to fill the radiator (engine cold) to the top, and then put the Rad.cap back on and fill the overflow reservoir to the proper level. The cooling system will suck the coolant back into the radiator after a few cycles of driving and parking. Just check the coolant level at the reservoir and refill as needed. Also make sure that the radiator cap is the sealed type with a gasket that seals to the top of the radiator neck. The heater should work better also..
