Hello;

Would anybody know where I could get an American made engine stand for my engine project?

I have been looking high and low, and thought maybe one of you good folks might be able to help.

Made my own, many years ago, to hold the Ford flat-head engines that we used for dirt track racing. Used 3 inch pipe, some flat stock for bracing, made it so the pipe that held the engine would turn inside of the top, horizontal pipe. A bolt dropped thru holes in the pipe kept it in the correct position. The feet/legs were spread out in a vee pattern, and welded to the vertical post. Used a piece of round stock, welded the adapter plate to a solid round bar stock that turned inside the horizontal top pipe. Worked good---so good that somebody who liked it better than me, absconded with it! Confused? Send me an e-mail and address, and i'll draw up the plans and send them--no charge.

I made my own too from scrap pipe and plate had laying around with plate platform that doubles as a shop dolly. Bought only some grade 8 bolts and casters for it. Used hard rod weeder bar for the leg arms and MM valve guides welded to those for bolt bushings. Used a old drip tray from a junked oven for removable drip tray under stand. Owatonna Tool Co. might still have USA made?

Cliff Neubauer"s idea below is great- if you want to make it cheaper, skip the pillow blocks, replace with one pipe inside of another. For turning- use a flywheel ring gear from a car, and a starter pinion gear mounted on a shaft. Drill holes in the double pipe setup and use a bolt to lock in place. Totally American made.

good luck finding a USA made one. I will bet that if you want a real USA made one, you will have to make it yourself or get a shop here to custom make it. either way you will have 8 to 10 times the cost in it that you can go to harpor freet of nourthern and buy one that some gooner made that is making 30 cents an hour. We are already SCREWED and noone wants to acknowledge it or believe it.

It wouldn't be very hard to make your own. I have a cheap 2,000lb capacity stand I modified this week to better handle heavy engines and building the rest of the frame would be easy. I built my own headstock using 2" solid round bar on a pair of ball bearings and used #60 roller chain to drive it off a 50:1 ratio worm drive gear box from www.surpluscenter.com
