Old freezer for barn storage cabinet.

My old Monkey Wards freezer died (circa 1970). My garbage pickup wants $50 to haul it off. Is there a safe way to turn it into a storage cabinet for the barn? Thanks much, .....don t. .....

I removed the lining of two 70's bottom freezer refrigerators and put in plywood shelving using 1x2 rails mounted on the interior metal frame. I also removed the plastic shelving from inside the door and put wood shelving there. It's great for paint storage, and other supplies. It keeps the stuff clean and free from dust, dirt & critters.

I've got an old upright that I've kept all my reloading stuff and ammunition in for years. I put a hasp and padlock on it to keep the kids out.

Thanks to all for your comments/suggestions. Im gonna try and figure out how to make it safer. We have summer time partys that involve kids of all ages. we all have fun, and I'd like to keep it that way. It does have a lock, if I can find the key. If I can't find a replacment lock, I could put an external lock on it. Thanks again, .....don t. .....

I use them for shop storage all time have 3 in shop now. otherwise scrap buyers will take them for nothing is what I have done

Read some where a while back where you could make a dog house out of an old chest type freezer. Take the motor out of the back and cut a hole on the bottom big enough for the dog to get in. You can toss straw in the top and shut the lid. Easy to clean out, safe because there is a big hole in it so kids don't die in it, and you don't have to haul it off. I would not want it in the front yard but out by a barn some where would not be bad. Good luck.

I used an old upright refrigerator to store my paint in hooked the light up so it would stay on
all the time, and used a 7 1/2 watt bulb in it.
Kept it a lot warmer than needed.

I have one chest type and 2 fridges laying on there side in my tack house. I use them to store feed in and have been doing so for about 10 years. In my shop I have a fridge I keep paint and carbs in and it also works great for that

We use our old freezer to store our horse feed in. Keeps it fresh and is easy to get out. Just a thought.

They want to charge you 50 bucks to take it away and then they will reclaim the R12 out of it and resell it, R12 is a very pricey, then they will scrap freezer. Think I heard R12 is about 800-1000 bucks for a 20 bottle.

There's typically 12 - 20 ounces of Freon (USUALLY FREON22) in a typical home freezer.

You can buy FREON 22 all day long on ebay, for less than $100.00 for a 30 LB. jug!

Even FREON 12 only sells for $15.00 to $30.00 for a 12 OUNCE can!

NOBODY's goona get REAL rich off of used FREON, at those prices!

To resell used FREON, it has to be purifed, and meet "specs", and the recyclers pay darned little for "raw" used FREON.

As long as you are talking about storage cabinets, I have found that the old heavy duty four drawer file cabinets work well. You can find them at rummage sales etc. They are great for storing power tools. I have my grinder and the grinder wheels in one drawer, circular saw and the related blades in another, welding and grinding helmets in another etc.

I bought a 30 drawer card cabinet (old computer punch card cabinet) for $5. Its worked well for a tool box/nut-n-bolts/misc storage in the barn. Each drawer is removable, and has saved me many a trip cuz I grabbed the wrong wrench.

I agree about the old heavy duty filing cabinets. Many years ago I got an extra heavy duty set of 4 drawers, olive drab military surplus. Each drawer is in its own stackable cabinet with tabs. I painted them to look like the rollaway toolbox next to it. It's been perfect for bigger tools. Separately I also used 2 heavy duty bigger square shaped steel drawers, stacked one on top of the other, bolted them together, then had a sheet metal shop make a door to go on the front and put heavy casters under it- I like that too.

I don't know where you are located, but here in CA there are companies that will pick it up for free and then recycle it. Just a thought.

I use one to store my herbicides in as well as the welding rods. I wired the light to stay on all the time. I keep a 15 watt light bulb in there in the winter - it keeps anything from freezing when I am not heating the shop. It also keeps the flux on the welding rod from absorbing moisture.

You really don't need to do anything to it. The refrigerant should not leak, or if it does it would be a rarety. I'd redo the door opener so as not to create a death trap for a youngster. Modify the shelving to make it functional..... ....you're good to go. I see lots of them used especially to store welding rods etc.

I wouldn't keep one around without removing the door. Two little kids suffocated in one near here a few years ago no amount of cheap dry storage is worth that. Lee
