My 99 ranger pickup smells like rotten eggs when you open the hood up. Nothing looks abnormal under there. Wonder what it could be?

Be VERY careful ,overcharging battery produces hydrogen gas. It smells like rotten eggs, and is very explosive..... ..... .....

My daughter came home one night and told me a sherriff had pulled her over as her cars exhaust was glowing cherry red.
The kitty was plugged up pretty bad. I'm surprised it even ran.

My vote is for a bad voltage regulator.

Rob you may have had a rodent crawl up there and die.

If you open the hood and it smells, better check the alternator output. It sounds like its dumping more than 14 volts to the battery. The smell comes from the vent on the battery itself. It will go away 5 to 10 minutes after you shut the engine off. Cat converters can put out the odor, but its not from under the hood.

Could be a battery overcharging or a plugged up catalytic converter. I have been told if the are plugged or bad they will smell like rotten eggs, something else to look at,

I agree on the catalytic converter. The rotten egg smell is the indication that it is plugged up and needs replacing. Check with a muffler shop. Not cheap however. Dave

Sounds like the battery is over charging.

Be careful working on this.I have seen battery caps blown off, bulged battery cases and exploded batteries. You are smelling sulfuric acid.Overcharging for sure.
