I have a Campbell Hausfeld Airless Paint sprayer that is approximately 20 years old. I have misplaced or lost the manual for it and I cannot find a model or serial number anywhere on the unit, it is driven by a HP electric motor and has legs so that it will set over a paint pail up to 5 gallon in size. This sprayer had not been used in about 4 years, when I tried to use it this week it will not pick up prime, the usual trick of freeing the inlet check valve did not work. The top reservoir of the assembly has hydraulic oil (and I assume there is a piston and some valving arrangement in there). The lower assembly (that part that pumps the paint) has a diaphragm, a inlet check valve, an outlet check valve, and a pressure regulating needle valve mounted in a block, I have had these apart and cleaned them and they appear to be ok. If anyone has experience with these sprayers, is there any tricks or short cuts to determining if the hydraulic part of the unit is operating the diaphragm, or any troubleshooting tricks that you can suggest for the lower block assembly?

I would be appreciative of any insight or suggestion that you can offer.

Thank you Tom R

Bruce:
Thanks for the hot line number I will try that as soon as I do enough homework on my unit. I don't want to sound like a complete idiot when I talk to a tech rep. I haven't been able to find any model information and I know that my unit is configured differently than the new ones I see in my local hardware store. The unit I have only has one adjusting knob where the newer ones appear to have at least 3 adjusting knobs plus a prime button.

Again thanks for the phone number. Tom R

Tom,
The one thing I remember working on these things is cleanliness is next to Godliness. That and paint is liquid sand paper. If the check balls are the least bit worn or dirty (and the seats they sit on) the machine will not pickup. It only takes 1 little spec of old paint. Make sure your pickup tube is clean and wide open and the screen on the bottom is open, soak everything in mineral spirits and give it a good scrubbing before putting it together and then try water first to see if it will pump. For safety sake keep your hands away from the spray nozzle, there are lots of serious injuries every year from INJECTION WOUNDS with these machines. At the rental store where I worked we had to hand out a medical card to each airless customer to give to the E.R.Dr. in case of just such an accident. Good Luck

Ray:

Thanks for your comments and the safety warning I have used this unit quite a little in years past and am aware of the danger but a reminder is always appreciated.

After using the unit I have always cleaned it with mineral spirits or water depending on the paint I was using and then I have always ran some diesel fuel through the unit and left it set charged with the diesel fuel under very low pressure. That method has always worked for me but this time due to the long idle period the diesel fuel leaked out and the unit was dry. I tried the cleaning as you suggested but as yet have not solved the problem.

Thanks for your good advice Tom R.
