When I had my roof put on I noticed one of the roofers pushing a magnet on wheels or cart thing around the yard. It picked up nails and small metal objects and seemed to do a good job. What is this thing called and where are they sold.

Thanks

The magnet out of an old magnetic mount CB antenna will work for small pickup jobs. Put it in a bag and when it gets loaded up, turn the bag inside out for instant disposal.

I've seen them at Tractor Supply. They have the one with wheels, and one that looks like a golf club that you swing as you walk. It always seemed like a good idea to me.

I beleive McMaster Carr, Grainger, or even a good local hardware store or lumber yard would have those.

Magnets similiar to what John described are still available and used today, just check your nearby large commercial airport, look and you'll a truck or other ramprat vehicle with something hanging low in the front, that'll be the magnet. Check with firms that sell street and runway sweeping equipment if you want industrial strength models. Also, govt surplus auctions and dealers may have them. Then, you can go cruise the roads and add items to your tool box. Have fun, George

kind of related: Years ago, the state department of roads had a truck fitted with a large electromagnet ahead of the front bumper,,,, made passes over the roads couple of times a year. When the farmers used wooden wagons,,, and homemade truck boxes,,, and flats were more common. Knew a guy that ran one, said he had to clean it every two miles,,,, nails, bolts, and horseshoes!
