I was not sure from the original post where it is blocked, but we have had pretty good luck with a shop vac. It will suck small stuff, and grab the bigger chunks, then you have to pull the hose back and take it off the end. USE a drywall filter in your shop vac, as it is messy fine dust. I would guess it could be creosote, but there should be none (or a shiny glaze) on the sides after that many years. The glaze will usualy dry over the summer months and release itself. That stuff may have fallen and plugged the chimney. I'm not so sure I should recomend this, AND I DO NOT FOR LEGAL REASONS). But what I used to do before joining the fire department about thirty years ago, was to burn my chimney out with feed sacks ever few days. But on the third Monday of the month at seven PM I would realy burn it out. That was the fire department meeting night and time when they were all down at the station cutting the responce time down considerably. The biggest problem was I told others, and they thought it was a good idea as well, so there were numerous problems building at the same time. You guys that have wood burners can get bulk five gallon buckets of fire extinguisher powder for I think around thirty five dollars. Just fill zip lock bags with the powder. ----- Use a resperator as it is a very fine powder, or keep your face upwind. If you have a chimney fire just start throwing them down the chimney, I always overkill the amount because it doesn't cost much to go first class.
