Appreciate all the suggestions, I could not go any further with it today as something really important came up, hope to get back onto it tomorrow, will let y'all know what happens, I still think I can some how poke through it.

The light situation is strange as I believe I had work lights on both sides of the suspected area, and nothing showed, in complete darkness. The 1/2" hardened chain with a large towing hook, may or may not have gotten to the blockage, maybe hung up before, but I sure gave it a serious rattling and up/down free fall, the change in direction may be deflecting the impact.

Santa Claus??? Seems to me there was a missing person's report ..... last sighted in your area.

No .... wait .... that was cruel. Always seems to be one clueless a$$hole in every thread, doesn't there?

Good luck, hope you get it cleared.

Joe

Nah, his flue is clearly marked, SANTA and he's got a choice as this place has 2 big chimneys, each having outside air fed fireplaces with 2'x2'flues, I could slide down either of them myself. Without humor and clueless $#%!...., life would be a little boring would'nt it ? :)

I was not sure from the original post where it is blocked, but we have had pretty good luck with a shop vac. It will suck small stuff, and grab the bigger chunks, then you have to pull the hose back and take it off the end. USE a drywall filter in your shop vac, as it is messy fine dust.

I would guess it could be creosote, but there should be none (or a shiny glaze) on the sides after that many years. The glaze will usualy dry over the summer months and release itself.

That stuff may have fallen and plugged the chimney.

I'm not so sure I should recomend this, AND I DO NOT FOR LEGAL REASONS). But what I used to do before joining the fire department about thirty years ago, was to burn my chimney out with feed sacks ever few days. But on the third Monday of the month at seven PM I would realy burn it out. That was the fire department meeting night and time when they were all down at the station cutting the responce time down considerably. The biggest problem was I told others, and they thought it was a good idea as well, so there were numerous problems building at the same time.

You guys that have wood burners can get bulk five gallon buckets of fire extinguisher powder for I think around thirty five dollars. Just fill zip lock bags with the powder. ----- Use a resperator as it is a very fine powder, or keep your face upwind. If you have a chimney fire just start throwing them down the chimney, I always overkill the amount because it doesn't cost much to go first class.

You can also use the dry chemical powder from the bottom of the chimney, provided the chimney is drawing. Might save you a trip to the rooftop.

Second the ziploc bags full of dry powder. They work great, provided the chimney is not blocked.

Log Chain. In the old days, when people in our area heated with wood, we would keep a log chain on the fire engine. If the chimney was engulfed, up we went with the chain, dropped it into the chimney and rattled the heck out of it. That caused most of the stuff to drop into the hearth.

I read and responded to your post before i read the other one, whoopsy my bad.

As for his problem, did someone seal the chimney off? For no light to be getting through there must be alot of stuff in there, I think hitting it with a pipe or something from the bottom side sounds like a good idea, dropping something on it may wedge whatever is in there tighter.

Find a chimney brush that fits yours and do it right, it's the best way. If you don't clean it all the way out you will have to keep trying to unplug it, if it does get blocked good you will be seeing the local FD. The creosote could be doming on the top of your chimney the best way to clean it is to go up on the roof and brush it out. I know its cold and slippery, but its better than having a chimney fire.
