It seems as though I have to buy one of these every year, just about a month or two out of a warranty, do you folks have any favorite brands? I have been buying shop vac brand and hoover, it seems one just as poor as the other.

I checked the home builder magazines when I was looking. Believe it or not Craftsman had the best rating. I got the biggest they made, on sale at that, and it's been great.

As I understand, having done some research awhile back. Sears Vacs are made by Emerson under exclusive contract and design for many years.Emerson is a contract builder, besides selling items under their own name. The Sears have always been(IMHO)the best and strongest non-commercial wet/dry vacs commonly seen. The newer Ridgid and Genie vacs are also Emerson built though not twins to Sears or each other and have scored well on customer reviews.Shop Vac brand general purpose vacs seem to be pretty much somewhat lighter duty and more of a"bought for a specific task, then discard"type of machine. Also they build many inexpensive use oriented machines.Tools, wands, hoses all seem to be pretty much generic and may all come from subcontractor.
I run a Sears 3.5hp/16gal and 6hp/16,however ratings are misleading as there is NO way you can pull 3.5 or 6hp off a 115V/15A circuit.
I scrounge Vacs and attachments and Lamb motors seems to be about top in quality. Some of the old tin pail jobs had great motors and can be easily adapted to a modern 5-6 gallon bucket. With 5-6 10-12 ft hoses and about 18-20 2ft wand sections it's amazing what can be accomplished (:

I have a large Craftsman (32+ gal?). It is a little big for what I need, but it is still ticking some 20 years later.

I'm also shopping for a new medium to large shop vac. I've settled on either a Craftsman brand or a unit from Home Depot.

One thing thing that's important to me is noise, or rather lack of it. Screaming shop vacs are tiring for me to use so I'm looking for a unit with the least noise (I know noise is relative).

So... how are the newer Craftsman and Home Depot models when it comes to noise?

I plan to buy a Ridgid vac (Emerson Electric) from Home Depot the next time I need one.

I"ve got three Shop Vac units here. a 10-galloner, a 6-galloner, and a littel guy maybe a 2-galloner. I"ve had them for a few years now with out any problems. The 10-galloner is from Lowes and has their colors. Just found out last time my brother was down that they make regular bags (like the ones in the "Bosses" houselhold unit)for these things now. I got bags for the two larger units, but not for the little guy yet. I"m thinking when we get to drywalling that the bags will be well worth the expense. Wal Mart and HD handle them and I would suppose others as well. Maybe I"ve just been lucky.

Craftsman - i have had them all my life and i think i am on my third one. You must be religious about keeping the filter clean and they will run for a long time.

My craftsman will suck a golf ball though a garden hose....or the chrome off a bumper....

I am a craftsman shop vac fan. I have 2 of them a small one and the large one. Large one(forget size) really has some power.... both these are about 4 or 5 years old...

I've got a craftsman, '98 4.25 hp, still using the original filter and it's been used quite a bit, my friend has the 6.0hp model, same era, nice machines, lots of pull compared to new shop vac brand, not bad for the money, hopefully they have not changed in the last 10 years.

ShopVac brand is a scam. I bought a big stainless ShopVac for our business. Paid over 600 dollars for it. It was so weak that I called the factory a week after I bought it.. I was told that I would have to pay to get it fixed... Their warranty is worthless !

I have had one I got from Lowe's about three years ago, works great. Before that I had a Sears brand that I bought in 1987 the only reason I replaced was the container rusted out, motor was still working fine. Just like anything else they are only as good as the care you give them.

At one time I had a vac with a rusted out tank. I removed the motor and other parts and installed it in the cover of an old 35 gal cardboard barrel, then proceeded to suck loose dirt from the bottom of fence post holes. The filter wasn't very good and soon the dirt killed the motor. But it sure worked good for a while.

Somewhere I read that upright household vac bags can be cut to size and turned inside out to be used in a shop vac over the standard $10 filter. They can be bought at thrift stores for $2/3 bags.....

i get the home depot vacuum cleaners, after every holiday, they have their 5 hp ridgid on sale for 28.00. that is a GREAT price for a vacuum cleaner, and I own 3 of them. They are working just fine.
