kind of O/T puter virus

Got a virus! The computer was slowing down so last night I went to the C drive and found hundreds and hundreds of copies of some Adobe-like document. Each was 1 meg.

Took an hour to delete them, then I did a scan with Trend micro. Thirteen problems were found and quarantined. This morning there isn't any strange looking stuff on the C drive yet and the machine is working about as fast as it should.

Could any of you computer gurus out there tell me if there's anywhere else to look in the computer to be certain the bug is gone? I'm afraid it might be hiding somewhere I don't know about. Jim

A couple of years ago, something similar happened to my mother's computer. She mentioned was slower than slow, so I took a look at it while was over. Yep, like mud. She has McAfee, and they're not the best. I toyed with it for hours, and happened to accidentally catch something running in Task Manager that I'd never seen before, so did a file search on it and found it as a recent executable but couldn't delete it. Hmm. Took some real digging back to the caveman days and playing with DOS commands under the Command Prompt, but I found it and deleted it. Computer took off like on a drag strip after that. I did a Google for DOS Commands after that and saved them in Notepad, because no one remembers DOS commands, especially me, and when it comes time to do them its like, "Now, was it *.* delete or was it...".

And then I made the mistake of loading Norton on her PC before I took off McAfee. Youch! Thats like a train wreck and a knockout punch to the processor during startup. That took a couple of hours and hair pulling before I caught the right moment of startup...or safe mode to stop the process and...I forget, but won't do that again.

I sugest that you use a program to remove viruses If you delete them some of them just run and hide some other place. Your trend should have found them and taken care of them. Ask your self how you got them in the first place. No virus detector running? Are you running MS "look out"?

We had a lapse in our security back in December. I put off renewing for too long, and it shut off on me. My fault. That's probably when it came in the door.

I just dumped the temp files and trash bin, but I haven't shut off restore yet.

We'll see what happens now. Thanks for the help. Jim

You would want to delete all temporary Internet files (under tools, options, in Internet Explorer).

Also, empty your recycle bin.

Also, right-click on My Computer, and click properties - then check mark "turn off system restore".

You can turn system restore back on afterwards if you want - but all three of those "system areas" are used by malware/viruses to "hide".
