Turn off the monitor. I've bought maybe 20 different monitors and have worked on a few besides that. The heat build up kills most monitors long befor the main CPU box. I have one 17 inch that I bought new 6 years ago with close to 12,000 hours since new. I installed a fan in it to keep it cool and it's still strong. I have another better quality 19 thats 2 1/2 years old but was run hot and is very weak in that short of time. No question to me since I've seen and worked on the insides of them.. Electronics is a hobby with me. ralph

You are likely to get lots of different answers, all right and all wrong. This is a topic with a lot of rules of thumb and little hard data. In general if the time unused is longer than the time used turn it off. Yes, you thrermal cycle all the parts, but they are not that hot, and you reduce the total time at the elevated temperature. So if you are on all day, and only shut it off at night you might want to leave it on. If you are on for an hour or two and will be back on in an hour or two leave it on. If you are on an hour or two and wont be back on till the next day, shut it off.
By the way, just how long do you want it to last? You need a new one due to upgrades long before it dies!

There is nothing more harmful to electronic equipment, especially computers, than turning them on and off. Thermal cycling is the culprit. While you may think you save some $ on the cost of electricity, you can buy a whole lot of electricity for what one new computer costs. We have one computer that has been on for over 7 years, for example.

I've been turning this one off every night now for 3 years. Not to save electricity. The power around here goes off on a regular basis. It's gone off a few times while I'm using the computer. Then it has to run scandisk.

I see your point. I guess the only benefit of turning off would be a clean boot.

Unfortunately computers become obsolete long before they wear out most of the time. We are still on a quick upgrade path. A lot of 7 year old computers would still work, but they are 386/486 machines with 14" monitors & are now landfill. This site still works with my P1 computer & IE 3.02, but lots of sites no longer work. Upgrade to 5.x??? Takes more memory, bigger hard drive, processor slow for the bigger program, things would work better with WinME which takes bigger hard drive more memory faster processor.... Time to throw it all away & get a new one.

I'm really hard on computers, owned a dozen or so, turn them on & off al day long, many many heat cycles. They seem to last. Not that your point is invalid tho, just my experience.

The monitor is the big juice eater, turn that off. If you have an energy star model & are using the sleep mode that helps, but it still uses juice, turn it off. The computer also can have some sleep mode settings to use less when it is inactive.
