I think if you leased them, and the dealer sold the business, they belong to the new owner. If he just closed for whatever reason they are abandoned and are yours. See if you can find him and get a bill of sale to make things easier.

Locally tractor supply offers a gas service called Throughbred where they exchange tanks. Seems to me all you have to do is sign a statement that you own the tank. I assume they take your tank clean it up and paint it light blue for the next customer. I"ve gotten tanks from TSC with all kinds of names stamped on them. Price isn"t cheap as 122 cu ft O2 cylinder costs 39.99 at TSC while at the less convenient local welding supply company it is $14.

Forgot to add, get a propane tip for your torch and use a 20# propane cylinder. It is cheaper, lasts longer, and cuts almost as well. Then you won't be at the mercy of the welding gas supplier for two cylinders.

I have leased my tanks from the same supplier for about ten years now. I've never seen them even look at a tank that I brought back empty. Most time I just drop it on their dock pay for a new one in the office and help myself to a full one. sounds like you need to find a more relaxed company to deal with.

Just bought two sets of cylinders at estate auction. Only bid on them because they had original bill of sale for them. Sometimes I think it depends on the mood of the guy at the counter when you get refilled. It pays to stick with the same people but there have been a few come and gone over the years

Happened to me too. Find out who bought them out and get em refilled there. Beware, the competition is gone and you'll be gouged.

Hi frdtrck,

My gas man told me there's a really easy way to tell if a cylinder is refillable or not. If the name of the company who owns the cylinder in imbossed with a companys name, like Linde or NCG, etc;, around the neck, then only the original gas company will refill them.

If the cylinder is stamped with the cylinder info, then anyone can refill them or exchange them. There's no 2" imbossed company name around the neck.

Hi T_Bone,

It seems funny to me that the company name is on the neck band in raised letters. On a welding site I once read comments about this same problem. The person who had purchased tanks and was asking whether he would have a problem getting them refilled was surprisingly frank about how he planned to deal with the bad news he got. He said that it wouldn't be a problem because the tanks wouldn't have anything on the neck band when he took them to be refilled.

Raised identification information on the neck band of a product that was mainly used by office workers would probably be pretty effective. For a product that is commonly used by people who work with metal, it strikes me as shortsighted.

All the best, Stan

Hi Stan,

Ya but it worked on me as I didn't know that. The supplier was walking across the loading dock and before I had shut my pick-up door, he said he couldn't fill that center cylinder. It had the raised lettering.

That's the one I mentioned a couple years back where the gas supplier I bought it from sold me a rental tank 10yrs before that. I've never rented cylinders in my life as I think it's a waste of money. Of course I have the receipt but I'm not looking thru 10yrs of receipts to locate it. I'll use plan "B".

Just one more to show how they are tested. It shouldn't be that costly or complicated and then someone should be able to fill them for you.

Like others said if your tanks have another company's name stamped on as owner or leasor of the tank and it's not their's they can refuse to refill it. Lots of people been sold leased tanks and auctions and you can't do that. Tanks needed to go back to the company they were leased from as they own them. The tank owner is responsible for liability of the tanks condition having a hydro test done on them every so often and that's what the date is from you see stamped on them. Valves and condition of those are responsibility of tank owner also so really you are better off not having that liability or worry just leasing tanks on exchange basis. Yes there are private owned tanks out there but you need papers proving you own them and stamped properly and testing not out of date or they sure don't have to fill them for you. It's a ownership liability thing mostly and federal laws on it. Do a google or online search for hydro test or hydro test procedures to find several explanations.

I've bought five tanks over the past 30 years, all from different sources, and I've changed suppliers several times, they all just exchange them and thank me for the business. At one time or another I think I've had tanks from most every major supplier in the country. No trouble at all.

I'll try to find a different supplier. The one I called does seem to have cornered the market at least locally. Maybe if I go a little farther from home. Thanks, Steve

Hey Steve, the dealer has no right to confiscate them. That would be theft on his part. If he has an issue he woud have to prove his case that you stole them. The dealer is just looking to make more money off of you. I have tanks in two different states and never had any trouble getting them excahnged or refilled. My 2 sets of oxy and acety were purchased used without a recipt. The argonco2 were bought from different dealers in seperate areas. Sounds to me like you need to find a new dealer. Where there is competition among dealers this will not happen. Only a dealer who has a area exclusive is going to play games with you. You can't control what a supplier will do but you sure can replace them.

I had a situation here about 2 years ago. I went to Eastern SD and bought a torch and a set of tanks on a local farm auction. Six months later when the acetylene tank went empty I called my local supplier on the phone. He accused me of stealing them and told me if I brought them in he would refuse to fill them and would confiscate them. So now they sit here empty and I'm not using them at all. I have absolutely no idea the name of the retiring farmer where I bought them. Any ideas? Steve

Do the tanks have LEASED or PROPERTY OF stamped on them ? If so they were likely not the property of the person who sold them to ya.

mine have SOLD stamped in them.

Do you have any type of receipt from paying at the auction that would list them?

I don't see why you couldn't "give" them to a friend and they could sell them back to you. You could write them a check that they just decide to rip it up (or something along those lines). Then at least you would have a bill of sale.

I would also look for another supplier. Sounds like the one you are dealing with doesn't want your money.

If they have "leased" or "property of" stamped in them then you cannot sell or buy them.

You can't sell a house you are renting can you ?

I bought mine from a Napa store. Have had them exchanged at another Napa store no problem with bill of sale.

I've been using propane a lot over the last 5 years, I've used 4 oxygen & only 1 acetylene so I have to check the hydro date on the exchange acetylene flask they give me.

Joe

I've never had any problem getting the set I have filled. The place I got them from has since been sold 4 or 5 times and the new place always takes them

I also live in Central Illinois and I own my own tanks. I usully get them filled where I bought them with no problems. They told me at the time of purchase that if I moved to another area that my bill of sales would prove ownership and I would not have any problems filling them anywhere. They aso said the bill of sale served as the title to the tanks.

Maybe you can get a bill of sale somewhere. If you need more help, email me and I may be ble to help. There is a local plant that manufactures gas and they have filled tanks for me in the past.

Did you buy them ? Do you have a title for them ? If all is legal , most welding supply places here will exchange tanks with full ones . Years ago I had a set of tanks given to me by an older gentleman & he gave me a legal bill of sale for them . I took them to my supplier & explained everything to him & showed him the papers . He gave me set of full tanks with no trouble . It seems that if the companies near you want business they will help you out . All tanks are the same so whats the difference ? HTH ! God bless, Ken

Are the tanks you have rented or bought? If they are owned by you, most places (at least around me) will just exchange it with another "owner" tank. I just pay for the gas that is in it.

You need to look on the tanks for the owner name stamped in the tank and then find a drop station for that company. Central IL could be IL-MO, SJ Smith, Praxair and probably 3 or 4 more that I can`t think of. The reason most welding supply co are so picky about whose bottles they fill is a little thing called a Federal law that says you cannot fill a tank that is not yours. The tank that most people think they own they don`t, they have an exchange agreement, you do not own anything but a right to a tank. Yes there are some customer owned tanks but not many.

I have one that is stamped "SOLD" in 1/2" high letters on the shoulder and another that has "CUSTOMER OWNED" in raised lettering on the collar ring.
