Its puter is giving me a P0440 which refers me to the evaporative emission system. It could anything from a loose gas cap, cracked hose to evap. cannister, bad soleniod, or a vacuum leak at engine. I spent time yesterday checking hoses and removing and replacing the gas cap. Everything looks ok. Has anyone here had experience with this problem? Suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Has anyone refueled the car with the motor running OR with the ignition switch on. The computer gets a little touchy sometimes and, even though the motor isn't running, the computer thinks it's an evaporative leak.

Sometimes when I put fuel in it, I will turn the key to the ACC position so the radio will be on, but not while running.

Look under van at LH side under front floor board. The EVAP leak detection pump is at LH rear of engine cradle and the canister purge valve and canister is slightly behind it.

Look closely at the rubber hoses(about the size of heater hose)for cracking.I've found these to be split.Cheap rubber. ~brad

Thanks, Brad. I located those parts yesterday and looked at them a bit. I will have to check later on a warmer day since it will be easier to work with the rubber and plastic parts. The hoses looked pretty good to me, as much as I could see of them.

What is odd is that I just had it inspected about 3 days before the engine light came on. That has not been indicative of my luck lately

You"ve about covered the basics. A leak in there somewhere! I had the same problem on a Chevy Blazer when I bought it from a used car daeler. Fortunately, they stood behind it, because they replaced several parts before they got it solved. There are solonoid valves on the engine, and at fuel tank. Both replaced. Also did a lot of inspection of lines, and had to take car to specialty shop where they did a "smoke" test. Apparently they put an attachment on the car which fills the system with smoke under some light pressure, and where the smoke leaks out..... Was the solonoid valve at the tank, and I got the old one back - every test I could do on it said that it was OK - but seemed to solve the problem.

I use to work on gm cars until 2 years ago. P044o is evap system code. Thinkingthat it is a small leak (not sure)
If you replaced the gas cap I hope you got one from mopar dealer.
Have seen alot af aftermarket new ones fail.
They could be vented. It should have a none vented cap.

I should have stated that I have not replaced anything. I believe it has the original gas cap on it.
