OT: Need EZ-GO Elec Cart Expert

A little off topic I know but many use these carts and some must repair them. Here goes...Cart comes in shop (I'm supposewd to be a mechanic) Not moving. Batteries dead. Charge batts, replace eloctronic speed control box and relay. End up putting on new drive motor. Cart moves fine on blocks, spins right up. Set it down and it just creeps real slow and cables to motor are HOTTTT. free wheels easily, no mechanical drag. Have access to new batts so I throw a set in. Same thing. Smoking hot from electronic speed control to motor. So, basically the only thing I did not replace was the cables. Although, I did try the new speed control prior to putting in the new motor. The old motor had a damaged stud.

Just an update from what I gleaned from an EZ GO forum. The controller, which replaced the old one may not be sized correctly for the replacement motor, or more precisely the motor may not match the controller. The motor was a replacement but not the same exact brand. I won't be back to work until tonight to check it. I gathered this from the cart website which referenced a similar situation when installing off road performance and lift kits etc on these carts. I suspect the cable(s) too, but all are hot. Both forward and reverse to the motor and batt cables to controller. As if the motor is just plain too much, as mentioned above.

Double check the connections from the controller to the motor. Make sure A1 on the motor goes to A1 on the controller same with A2, S1 and S2.
Also make sure the batteries are wire correctly.
It sounds like you don't have enough voltage to the motor.

Here is an easy way to test 4 post DC motor. Lift the drive tires off the ground. Remove cables from motor.
Connect a cable between A1 and S2. Then using a 12 volt battery, connect jumper cables from A2 to positive and S1 to negative. If motor spins it's good. The motor will spin slow with the reduced volts. If you switch the pos. and neg. from the battery the motor will just spin in the other direction.

I think you've got a bad cable or too small a cable. You can do a voltage drop test or start feeling the cables and see which cable is hot. That's your bad one. Normally the electronic controller will just quit working and a bad potentiometer (it's hooked to the accelerator pedal) will give you a dead spot at a certain pedal position.

My bet is on a bad cable from the speed controller to the motor.

A voltage test at the end of the cable will show correct voltage. ...But, if the cable is corroded (or strands broken) internally, the amount of amperage needed to move the cart under load is not available due to the increased resistance.

Sounds like brushes or an armature. Brushes wear out and draw more amps. Amps = heat. Resistance also means heat.

Have you checked the wiring schematic? Sounds like a bad connection or mis wired.

Thats just it, All the major cables going to and from motor are correct and the controller has a flat plug that can't be screwed up. Forward and reverse work as they should, just bogged down and HOT. As you can see I have access to parts but too much time spent on the job will draw attention. that, and i would actually like to fix it.

Cables can fail inside the insulation. Weak spots draw too many amps.

I'm sure you checked but..double check battery series cables and are you sure all new/replacement parts are voltage compatible with whichever voltage (36 vs 48) the cart has.
