OT--Lost my dogs

Sorry this isn't about tools but I really need to tell this to someone right now. Got 2 inches of snow yesterday here in Iowa. My wife let our 2 yellow labs out for a potty break about 2PM and we haven't seen them since-30 hours later. I tracked them for about 3 hours till it got dark. About an hour before dark I heard 2 series of shots from the direction of a not-so-nice neighbor who is a big time deer hunter. They seemed to come from some sort of auto and there were 7 or 8 at a time. I got a bit concerned. The spot where I stopped tracking at dark lead across the hill right towards his house. I spent a very sleepless night. I drove the icy slick gravel roads around and around till 1AM looking in every field and pasture I came to. Put about 50 miles on the truck and never got more than 5 miles from the house all of it at 5-10MPH in 4X4. Got up at daylight drove the roads around the area they were last in. I had put it off but I knew I had to follow their tracks again. I started where I left off at dark last night. Their tracks lead right toward his house and I was certain of what I would find. About 100 yards from his house the tracks turned and headed downhill away from his property. (Good Dogs!!)I followed their tracks for 6 hours in the new snow but never saw our dogs. At least it was away from the danger zone. We've driven the roads and walked fence lines all day till dark. My wife made up some flyers and posted them around town. Early I called the sheriff, both vet clinics, and animal control.
I'm 55 and I'm not sure I can take another day of tracking and walking fences. It will be day 3. I'm kinda resigned to the possibility that the dogs are with someone who hasn't contacted us-they have collars and tags with our name and number, or they have been shot-2 more days of late deer season. Let me know if I've missed anything that might get our dogs back. I can't begin to tell you what they mean to my wife and me..... ....

Hi Michael,

Please tell us that your dogs are safely home now. I've lost two of my dogs in the last six months---one of them horribly, and my fault---and this is the darkest winter I've ever had to get through. What's happening to you is almost unbearable even to read about. I can't begin to tell you how much I hope it all comes out right for you.

The electronic fence works well to keep your dog on your land. I've heard some say, it don't work on my dog, so one must remember that it is a training aid not a fence like used for livestock.

I know what you're going through. They're family, if you ask me. I lost my lab, Lou last Saturday to an illness. That was my boy, my partner for years and years. I work out of town during the week, make it home Friday nights, and when I'd start up the drive, someone would let him out the back door, and down the fence he'd come and wait for me to let him up into the truck, and off we'd go lookin for "them reindeers" with his head hangin out the window blowing snot, stomping on the front seat and woofing when he'd see one. Aint going to be the same no more. Saturday haircuts, out in the barn or fields, everywhere I'd go on weekends. Aint going to be the same no more. Even the work week's changed. I call home to talk to the family every night, and they always put me on the speaker phone so I could talk to him too, "Lou, partner, Lou..." and hear him moan and groan into the speaker, making me laugh and chuckle. And on Fridays before hitting the highway, they'd say "Its Friday, papa's comin home" and I'd hear him barking and going nuts. Nope, not the same anymore.

Good luck, they sure are family.

I'd tend to agree with Old Ford Mechanic. Labs are smart dogs generally- they know where "home" is, and, if nothing bad has happened to 'em it's a darned good bet they'll come back on their own.

Neighbors who shoot at wandering dogs(unless said dogs are actually hurting something like chasing stock, then feel free to blow 'em away) are about at the same level on my list as drug pushers and terrorists. Luckily I don't have neighbors like that....although we did have two dogs dissapear once about 10 years ago and one showed up to die at home with what sure looked like a gunshot wound....course he was a mutt that looked alot like a coyote....

Please keep us informed on the situation! Hope your dogs are already home for supper as I'm typing this!

PS- got a local radio station that most of the local farmers, etc. listen to? Might try running an ad on there(if the don't have a free "pet shop" like ours does). Good luck!

One last thing(dang, I wish there were an "edit function" on this deal!!!

In the future, just let one of 'em out to do their business at a time. I've never had a dog run off on their own- always was with a "buddy". And I've owned a LOT of dogs(currently 13 counting hunting dogs)...And now that they've had a taste of the "free life", they'll be that much more likely to do it again if given the chance.

I'm hoping you guys will receive your dogs - I know some couples where their kids have left the town - and their dogs mean so much to them - more, like a God-sent gift of 'socialization'!

Try and call a few choice neighbors, perhaps leave some food out to eat... anything is possible!!

Relax Michael,I'm pretty sure your dogs will show back up soon.Most of the time they will just run whatever they are after until they get tired and uninterested anymore.And sometimes it takes awhile.They are are probaly holed up somewhere resting a bit before they return home.Probaly enjoying their freedom if they stay inside a lot.And if they are males they may have found a friend,if you catch my drift.
