How do you cut temper glass???

Trying to cut 1/8 in. temper glass. I scored both sides with a glass cutter and tryed to snap the cut. It won,t break. Anyone know how temper glass is cut.. Thanks , Robert in Md.

If you are really careful you can cut it with an abrasive wheel in a die grinder. Key its to go slow don't let the heat buildup. I have never cut a piece in half but cut corners with success. Its pretty dramatic when it breaks so cover it up to contain it. Wear your glasses or goggles would be better.

You cut the glass to size and shape, THEN temper it, at least that is what a couple of glass shops told me when I wanted tempered glass for a couple of man doors in my shop. I ended up with laminated glass, as they stock that and its easy to cut, but won't bust out all over the place.

Generally you don't cut tempered glass. When you try it shatters into small hexagons.

"Tempered glass should receive the same care as annealed glass. Unfortunately, familiarity with the greatly improved strength of tempered glass may mislead people to exert less care in handling it. Careless handling and improper installation sometimes produce edge damage. Delayed breakage can ensue when edge-damaged tempered glass is subjected to a moderate thermal of mechanical stress. Full penetration of the compression layer will likely produce instantaneous total fragmentation of tempered glass. Hence, tempered glass cannot be cut or modified following heat treatment."
